“Excellent Food”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

On the main street of Franshoek this restaurant offers a very high standard of food and wine.
Would suggest that you book early if you can and have a table outside.

“so disappointing!”
Reviewed February 4, 2013

Maybe we got a bad night ( Sunday) but this was the worst of the 4 restaurants we ate in during our stay in Franschoek! The service was really poor - we had to look for our wine to top up our glasses, part of one of the meals failed to arrive and the food was not good. A different waiter apologised and said something about complimentary desserts but by that stage we just wanted to leave. I had so looked forward to eating at the iconic Reubens - what a let down.

“A massive, massive disappointment.”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

We went to Reuben's for an evening meal which had been booked for us by our hotel, La Residence, whilst on a two night stay in Franschoek. Mistakenly, I assumed that because La Residence had booked it for us, we would have had an exceptional time. The truth was totally the opposite. On arrival there was a query over our booking which took longer than it should have to sort out, especially as there were plenty of empty tables.
When we were shown to our table it was in the front part facing the street, with all the atmosphere of a cheap coffee shop. The service was unbearably slow. Why is that waiting staff think that if you have a bottle of water and a glass of wine you don't need to order food? We waited too long to order, it felt like we were being ignored. We then waited 45 minutes for our meal. Granted we had no starter, but we didn't want one. The waiter could see we were agitated and kept sating 'It won't be long now...' He was obviously in a different time zone to the rest of the world. When the food came, it was OK, just OK. I had Potato Gnocchi and the dish admittedly looked nice enough, but the white sauce was bland, and I left half of it. My husband had steak with a peppercorn sauce, which he thought we could do better at home. I don't even remember the desserts, that's how good they were.
Paying the bill also took far too long. To be honest we probably could've slipped out and nobody would have noticed or cared.
The Rough Guide really rates this place, but how it ever got the reputation that it has is completely beyond me. In the end, I'd rather have spent the evening dining at La Residence, where the food, service and atmosphere were totally out of this world. Wake up Reuben, whoever you are, and sort this place out!

“A Tale of Two Evenings”
Reviewed January 30, 2013 via mobile

Dined twice at Reuben's during our recent stay. We like the informal Wine Bar atmosphere and the staff are friendly.
The first evening it was moderately busy and we were seated in the main restaurant. My breast of duck was delicious and the evening was relaxed and enjoyable. So much so that we arranged to come for another meal three nights later.
On this occasion, the restaurant was extremely busy with a number of large groups dining. We were relocated to another area of the restaurant to accommodate them and, not surprisingly, the service was extremely slow.
On this occasion, we noticed how hot the restaurant was because there have no air conditioning. Presumably this was aggravated by the large number of diners crammed into a confined space on a warm summer's evening.
All in all then, a mixed review. The staff did their best to make us feel welcome on both occasions but the diining experience was very different on these two evenings set just a few days apart.

“Not as "amazing" as promised but still a good evening”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

Everyone told us that we had to dine in Reubens and so we did. The sommellier Ryan is a delightful chap and gave some great advice about wines to accompany our courses and the food was in the main very good. I was just not quite the dining experience that we had been given to expect. HHowever on the whole it was a good evening and the food was fine if a little more pricey than elsewhere.
