“round the corner from gourmet paradise”
Reviewed January 16, 2012

A lovely place with large rooms and even larger loos with old fashioned claw footed baths. We stayed in the annexe which gave us a feeling it was our own home, especially with the complimentary port and sherry. Sadly it rained throughout our visit so we didn't enjoy the very inviting garden and wrap around verandah.

The hosts are charming..we loved our chat with them about cricket and rugby and they very kindly shared their excellent cricket library with us. Not many might know that this little town is where many of the rules governing one day cricket emerged.

The B&B is located round the corner from world class restaurants..try Reuben"s which was our favourite.

The view of the monument at the end of town withthe hills ringing it is specatcular!

La Fontaine is in a great location a few minutes walk to Franschhoek's main street, where there are excellent restaurants, shops and even a great chocolate shop. Franschhoek has a relaxed feel about it and a lovely place to chill and take in the scenery and of course try the wine and wonderful food on offer. The guest rooms are pleasantly furnished with high ceilings and lovely wooden floors. We stayed in a room on the front with the shared balcony, which was a great place to sit and watch the sun go down with a glass of complimentary port. The bathroom was large with a bath and separate shower. Nice touches such as providing thick throws on the bed and hot water bottles in the wardrobe for winter months and colder nights - we were there in September and didn't need either thankfully. Good quality bed linen. Breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice, fresh and cooked to order if required. We had a half day morning wine tour with Keith from Redwoods, as this was all we could fit in to our schedule. Nevertheless it was informative, fun and Keith personally chauffeured us around the vineyards. We ate at the Common Room, very good for an informal supper and La Petite Ferme, where the food and wine was quite superb. Enjoy!

Room Tip: 1st floor overlooking the front with the shared balcony

This guest house is superbly located in Franschhoek. The staff were very helpful and sorted out restaurants and a wine tour for us. The room was good (room 2) and the bed was exceptionally comfortable! No TV in the room but there are a couple of lounges with TV's if you wanted. There is a lovely communal balcony where you can sit, read and watch the sunset with a complimentary glass of port.

Breakfast is ok, service was a little slow compared to some places we stayed.

We would recommend the wine tour for a full day, with David a local guide, it is great fun and we managed to get round five of the best wineries in the area (including one in Stellenbosch).

Thank you for posting a review on your stay at La Fontaine and bringing to our notice that the service at breakfast was slow. To maintain our high standards, we cook the hot breakfast on demand so nothing is left standing in a bain marie for hours to get hard and leathery! We will try our best to quicken the process. Regards, Kathie

We were initially booked to stay in Stellenbosch, but really glad we went to Franschhoek instead. The location of La Fontaine is excellent and it's a short stroll down to the main street where there are great places to eat, shop etc. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful (including the resident cat) and the entire property was tastefully decorated. Would highly recommend this guest house.

We booked La Fontaine on the back of Trip Advisor for two days during our recent trip to South Africa. Franschhoek is a lovely village about 40 minutes from Stellenbosch and, in my mind, much nicer. There is a main street which has the restaurants and shops with the wineries all close by. Consequently, we wanted a guest house near the centre so we could walk to restaurants (and more importantly, walk back from!). La Fontaine is literally just behind the main street, Huguenot Street, so a 5 minute walk brings you within spitting distance of many great restaurants. Our room was of medium size but perfectly adequate with a great bathroom. We had a shared balcony and there was complimentary port and sherry for guests. The breakfasts were great and they even started early so we could go horse riding. This was probably the most expensive of all the guest houses we stayed in at SAR 1250 per room/night but we were paying for location so didn't mind. Be careful when parking as the car park is very small which is always fun when in a hire car!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a balcony

We stayed here for two nights and from the moment we arrived we had a lovely sense of welcome and warmth. The guest house is beautiful, lovely decor, beautiful garden and court yard where we enjoyed a gorgeous breakfast. We didn't get to meet Kathie but she very kindly took the bother to contact us once home because we had left something behind, which we thought was lovely. Dawn was amazing, really helpful, arranging a guide called David to take us on a wine tour. We had to leave the hotel early in the morning and Dawn herself made a packed lunch for us to take with us as we didn't have time for breakfast. The vicinity of hotel is really good, just around the corner from the main street and restaurants (go to Reubins for a fantastic steak!!). Thank you so much for a wonderful stay - hope we get a chance to return!

Room Tip: I think from the quality of the hotel, any of the rooms would be excellent, although the rooms off t...
