“Wow! Beautiful views and location. Service superb”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

Thank you to the team at Le Franschhoek Hotek & Spa for a lovely long weekend.
It was great to see a wedding taking place too and the hotels beauty being utilsed to the max!

Our Food in DISH restaurant was superb and it was great o meet The Food & Beverage Manager -Sean

It was great to see that every morning we had either Francois or Sean to greet us and make us feel like royalty.

I would most certainly reccomend this piece of paradise as its not everywhere the staff greet you by name and have that 'personal touch'

Well done!

Started out by being placed in a room overlooking a delivery corridor with a leaky faucet and cracked full length mirror. Thankfully we were moved to a far nicer room, although for a 5 star hotel the decor needs a lot to be desired! Not a single flower greets one as you walk into the entrance, the paintings hang skew and a tattered carpet lines the staircase! 5 star, I think not! I havent even touched on the breakfast service: dirty tables, asking several times for place settings and serviettes, no breakfast order offer on day 2 and to round it all off a very insincere apology when stating our complaints!
We still managed to have a lovely weekend but this hotel is not by any means 5 star and nor should it be asking the prices it does!!

We would note the beauty of the village, the surrounding scenery, vineyards and mountains, and the hotel proper. Quite nice. The staff at the hotel was friendly, but seem undermanned, and perhaps not as well trained as one might expect from an aspiring 5 star hotel. We were there during a weekend wedding, and it seemed to overwhelm the place. The restaurant and service were unfortunately below par. Given other options, we could not unconditionally recommend to our others. (But honestly, after a glass of great Stellenbosch wine, all is forgiven...).

Room Tip: The Vineyard Suites (which are only rooms) have a view of the mountains and valley. Most of the oth...

Dear Oceantics
Thank you for sharing your review.
I am very pleased that you enjoyed our natural beauty and the friendliness of our staff. It is a pity that the restaurant and service did not meet your expectations and we will endeavour to do better.
I am glad that you enjoyed the local wine :)

Happy travels!

We stayed at the Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa for a couple days in March 2013, for a wedding.

At first, the hotel, which sits outside Franschhoek (a 5mins cab ride) seems quite spectacular, nice and quiet: it isn't always so as it is located right next to a busy traffic axis used by agricultural machinery in the early hours of the morning...so be careful with your exact room location or be prepared to be awaken from 7am...

The gap between the pictures featured on the website and the reality of the place is shocking: the public areas of the hotel are very uneven, sometimes presentation is an issue (some areas of the hotel are used as a local artists art presentation/exposition which contrasts negatively with the Hotel's atmosphere), sometimes, it feels the place has just not been cleaned enough. As an example, the pool has that feeling of "left to itself" with bath-towels left on the floor, the garden just outside the hotel feel a little rough, etc...

At first also, our room was nice and charming, with beautiful views of the stunning surrounding mountains. Bed was good and firm and white cotton sheet were perfect, but... the french "boat" styled curtains were pretty but inefficient with morning daylight, the carpets were stained. The bathroom was very very disappointing: traces of dirt and wear everywhere, and dented furnitures. Some (many) 3* Hotels have better bathrooms...

The reception staff is professional, welcoming, and efficient, but rapidly, you realise that general service is very very patchy. Room service orders take ages to be delivered and this with not that many guests around (over an hour to get a coffee, a tea, and two fresh orange juices...). All this with a smile it is true. It was not obvious/possible to see who was really in charge, and it felt some staff were working really hard to palliate the deficiencies of others, resulting in a far from smooth experience. We did not try the restaurant, but rapidly, we did not want to...

A regrettable and average experience, and a shame given the potential of the place.

The room we had was not worthy of a 5* Hotel, VERY far from it, but the prices, however, were five stars.

Room Tip: Be careful with location of your room. Those close to the road can be noisy in the early morning.

Beautiful setting surrounded by mountains, river, vineyards. Great to take a walk early mornings. We stayed in a stunning and clean villa with a view over vinyards & mountain. lovely!
Unfortunately,
We waited too long for our cocktails at the pool. The same thing with our food and drink orders from the hotel at the spa. Ended cancelling order after an hour. Had a trainee serve breakfast the last morning that got my order wrong, twice. 3rd time it was cold even after complaining with the manager. Reception also sent the same trainee to query something on our hotel bill at the breakfast table, completely out of line, especially because they were at fault. Complete let down on the last day. I get why you sometimes need to train staff on the job but do not take on trainees that wouldn't even be capable to take a basic order at a small coffee shop at this 5* hotel.
Enjoyed dinner at the restaurant, food was exactly what you ordered but nothing more.
Treatments at Camelot Spa on premises - very good therapists, good experience.

I passed this hotel on a previous visit and was really pleased when I heard my clients had chosen it for their sales conference. The room was magnificent, clean, well-appointed with brilliant views. I was happy and impressed. The hotel is thatched and the whole place had a comforting and airy feel.

Breakfast was a delight with everything you could wish for and more.

Then things started to unravel. The pool side was unmanned, there were no towels. I walked to ask in reception for them to be delivered and after an hour there was no response. I went back to enquire. My feeling is that they are short-handed and staff have to double up.

Lunch time and Dish the main restaurant looked empty. We went to the Bistro type restaurant (the Vestry?) and it was shut. It only opened for our conference buffet lunch. So we went into Franschhoek instead!

In the evening more people had arrived and sadly my wife had not been feeling well so we went into Dish. We had the Chef's Special of fish that was promised with a mashed potato, but to our amazement that "chef had changed his mind" and it was being served with rice. This is not the way to do it! At least ask first. Anyway it mattered not because the whole confection was awful. I rarely have meal in which there is no merit, but this was salty, over-spiced, over-cooked and in a word "horrid"

In summary, the hotel is breath- taking. The staff are in the most part helpful and attentive, especially the concierge who was superb and the very best ever! Breakfasts brilliant, but take all other meals out in the town.

Dear Dweckie,

I am very pleased that you enjoyed your rooms, breakfast and our staff.
We definitely did not deliver the standard expected at the pool area and we have been looking at ways to better our service and offering there, inlcuding a soft refurbishment that will be happening in the next 6 weeks. Our Dish restaurant is only open for dinners, but Le Verger menu is available all day and night on the terrace, lounge and conservatories. Again I am terribly sorry that this was not communicated effectively and that you were dissapointed with your dinner.
In saying that I am very pleased that you still found our hotel breathtaking and will most definitely upon your return endeavour to do much better with the other aspects.

Happy Travels!
