“A delightful getaway”
Reviewed May 20, 2007

My partner and I stayed in Oortuiging, one of the three Akademie Street Guesthouses in Franschhoek, over a rainy weekend, and we simply didn't want to leave. This historical cottage has a wonderful atmosphere and is in immaculate condition, sensitively restored and very comfortably furnished. The garden is an absolute treat and like the interior, in tip-top condition. It is clear that great care has been taken to ensure that your every need is catered for. As for those little extras - a welcoming bottle of champagne and snacks, chocolates on your pillow, the heating turned up - they are the icing on the cake. Highly recommended, and we'll definitely be returning.

  • Liked — The condition of the cottage was immaculate.
  • Disliked — No satellite television.

We recently spent three nights at the Akademie Street Guesthouse in Franschhoek, Western Cape, South Africa, and we can not praise it highly enough. If you are looking for a quiet, first class retreat in the Food and Wine Capital of South Africa, look no further. There are 3 separate cottages. We stayed in the Oortuiging which is a two-bedroom, two-bath cottage with kitchen, living room and dining area. There is a private garden with a small pool. The decor was typical Cape Dutch and everything was super clean. Bathrooms come complete with lovely shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, lotion and even pillow spray!! The small refrigerator is stocked with juices, sodas, small bottles of liquor ---- and they are all complimentary and re-stocked daily!!! The television gets only a few channels but there is a DVD library in the main house where you can check out DVD's, all complimentary of course, as well as music CD's. Upon our arrival, there was a printout of the weather for the next few days along with a list of great restaurant recommendations.
The hosts, Katherine and Arthur McWilliam Smith, could not be more accommodating. Breakfast (weather permitting) is served under the grape arbor and consists of homemade museli, yogurt, fruits, breads, fruit smoothies and, if so desired, eggs made to order along with sausages, bacon, etc. Great coffee as well. Katherine and Arthur helped us make restaurant reservations, gave us individualized maps to our various destinations and simply were there for us whenever needed.
The guesthouses are only a couple of short blocks to town so we were able to walk to some of the town's fabulous restaurants like Le Quartier Francais and Reubens. The area is very safe, even for two ladies. Franschhoek is a small town compared to Stellenbosch and for us was much preferable. It seems you read so much more about Stellenbosch but it is a rather large city and a little hard to get around, whereas Franschhoek consists of one main street running about five blocks. The best restaurants in the Winelands are right in Franschhoek so why would you want to stay any where else?
Between myself and my traveling companion, we have stayed in places all over the world and would rate Akademie Street Guesthouses right at the top!

  • Liked — The serene setting
  • Disliked — Gosh, I liked everything. I would have liked a heated pool

After a long drive arriving in the beautiful town of Franschoek was a relief. We picked a guesthouse at random from a south african travel guide and rang. From then on we felt like royalty - the directions, reception, rooms (with a small bottle of 'bubbly' on arrival) could not be faulted. Advice on restaurants in the area were extremely helpful (with the reservation made for us).
After a splendid night out the room was a treat to return to - the best hotel bed we ever slept on, with wonderful high quality toiletries in the bathroom!
Breakfast out on the terrace was served by the owners and was a sumptous relaxed affair (with the BEST muesli we had ever) and fresh fruit as well as a choice of warm food was served.
In summary - a place we would strongly recommend and definitely will return to!

We stayed in Oortiging for three nights in late March and found the cottage to be of the highest quality. Every possible detail is taken care of -- even including an apron in the kitchen! Lovely art covers the walls and the decorating is charming. The breakfasts, served by friendly owners Katherine and Arthur, are a gourmands dream.

The real highlight for us was the private garden and pool area. It really was a beautiful, good-sized shaded garden, beautifully maintained. A small pool lies in the sunny part of the garden with very comfortable lounge chairs. Wonderful -- I would have been happy to lounge in the chair all afternoon just gazing at the garden!

For those seeking high quality and attention to detail, this place will not disappoint!

My husband and I stayed two nights at Akademie in the end of March 2007, and we really loved it! We stayed in Vreugde, which is the smallest of the three houses. For My husband and I, it was perfect. It was a quite big room, with a nice bed, a small kitchen with fruits, water, juice, wine and chocolate all for free, and a very nice bathroom, with both shower and tube. And we really appreciated to have our “own” pool and garden. The breakfast was very good. Everything I like to eat at breakfast was served, as yoghurt, muesli, fresh fruit, juice, fresh bread, a lot of nice cheeses, jam, tea and coffee. And for those who like hot breakfast, they also served that. And when we came back to “our” house after the breakfast, they have cleaned the room, made the bed and put new towels by “our” pool. And every night when we came back from one of the nice restaurant (there are lots of them in Franschoek), they had put a carafe of port and chocolate in our room!

The service was fantastic and Arthur and Katherine are really lovely people!!
I look forward to go back!

We stayed in "Oortuiging" for two nights in late March. The place is wonderful - located conveniently for Franschoek main attractions yet on a quiet and pleasant street. Beautiful private garden, own terrace and plunge pool, lovely house. The latter is large, full of authentic features yet all the mod cons are there (in excellent condition!); everything was spotless clean, beautiful rooms - nicely decorated, a lot of attention was paid to detail - lots of nice touches. But the best thing was Katherine's and Arthur's hospitality and their whole team's attention and help. Very welcoming, very nice and very helpful. They were there when you needed them without being intrusive. The owners helped us booking horse-riding tour, showed the most interesting vineyards to visit, etc. Breakfasts were oustanding - freshest fruit, home-made muesli, most delicious bread and cooked breakfasts... Definitely will stay there again!
