Akademie is a really beautiful spot in Franschoek . They offer a variety of different rooms/cottages in a stunning garden setting. We stayed in the Vreugde cottage, which had a little pool and veranda (with a brilliant heater....very practical as it rained the entire weekend). The owners Katherine & Arthur are extremly friendly; Arthur even picked us from a winefarm where we got stuck after heavy rain. Would definitly stay there again.

We found this property through Tripadvisor - and we're glad we did. The McWilliam-Smiths are excellent hosts (both brimming with nervous energy and the desire to ensure you have a good time) and they have created a lovely property - which manages to be both homely (in a good way) and professionally managed.

We stayed in Gelatentheid - a superb 2 storey property with a fantastically proportioned bedroom. The adjoining garden was paradise itself. Our ONLY bugbear was the noise from the main road 20m away which tended to awaken us too early for our liking.

Franschhoek is a delightful town and this property contributes to that.

We will return.

After reading the reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked and stayed for 4 nights in Gelatenheid whilst our friends stayed in Vreugde....and what a place! The whole experience far surpassed our expectations - the architecture was beautiful and the decor was stylish, quirky & really comfortable with an amazing attention to detail. Everything that you could want had been thought about and provided - from high speed wi-fi to the laundry service. The beds were massively comfortable, and the only thing that got us out of them was the enormous and delicious home-made breakfast served by our lovely hosts Arthur & Katherine and their staff. The place has a lovely feel to it - a calm, quiet oasis where you can really switch off if you want to - but with all the benefit of top class restaurants and wineries in the local area if you want to venture out. We didn't go out much as I had trouble getting the missus out of the outdoor bath-tub on the balcony.

We loved it so much that we're about to book to go back early next year. Both of us constantly travel globally for work and pleasure and independently commented that it is one of our favourite places.

We were travelling in South Africa for our honeymoon and this was my favourite place in which we stayed. The setting is absolutely beautiful and as soon as you step through the front door at reception you know that a lot of thought and care has gone into the home design -- making the place lavish but cozy, decadent but homey, classy and quirky all in one. All the art work is a touch of class with many of the paintings done by Cathy's father and painted ceramic work by her aunt. A sense of design and art definitely runs in the family!

We stayed in Twyfeling for 3 nights (extending from 2 nights as we loved it so much). The room (massive) with adjoining conservatory is at the front of the main house so it may not be as private as the other guesthouses at Akademie but we didn't have a problem with that at all. There is no traffic on the street and there are very few people coming through the house or reception so we were never disturbed. One day we were lucky to have a tour of all the accomodations as all others had checked out. Each place is gourgeous, private, and has its own personal feel and style.

As mentioned in other reviews, all the amenities and inclusions are top-class (and thoughtful). The breakfasts were bountiful and too tasty that it takes either a big appetite or strategic planning to make it to the last round of hot food. It even got my Irish husband passing up the eggs and bacon (and etc) for yogourt, muesli, and fruit (a habit he continued for the rest of the holiday!). Their home toasted muesli is one of the best I have EVER eaten.

As for Cathy and Arthur, they are wonderful hosts and attentive to every detail. From food and restaurant recommendations (our main reason for choosing Franschhoek), tips on day outings, and printed driving directions they were always available with their advice while the info binder and pre-programmed mobile phone in the rooms are invaluable.
There's enough to do in the area or within daytrip distance but if you also want to just have a period of relaxation and chilling, Akademie Street Guesthouses is a perfect retreat and a real treat.

We stayed here during our recent honeymoon in Southern Africa and found Akademie Street to be everything we had hoped for. A must for a Cape Winelands visit! We stayed for 2 nights in the spectacular, vineyard-filled town of Franschhoek and Akademie Street provided us with wonderful service, a fantastic location near the Village and various vineyards, and delicious breakfasts (try the local sausage and jams). Arthur and Katherine were fabulous hosts!
