Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and Guest House
Ranked #1 of 11 Hotels in Franschhoek
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 30, 2008

This was our third visit to Akademie Street & it was a very special visit for us as we got married whilst there! We absolutely wouldn't have dreamed of staying anywhere as the 100% positive ratings for this place are absolutely deserved. Katherine & Arthur are fantastic hosts and the accomodation is excellent! We always stay in Gelatenheid which is the largest (and loveliest!) of their 4 rooms but having seen two of the other rooms we definitely wouldn't have any qualms about staying in either of them! Katherine & Arthur are a fount of local information and will happily provide you with excellent recommendations for local restaurants, vineyards or other local attractions. Breakfast is amazing & little touches like the free laundry just make an already amazing visit just perfect!!

My wife and I, plus our two adult sons and their partners, had a house each for three days. The attention to detail was outstanding, complemented by the excellent staff and in particular the resident owners, Arthur and Katherine, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was absolutely terrific and always a great start to the day. A definite repeat if we are in Franschhoek again

We stayed at Akademie Street Guesthouses August 2008. I had emailed many questions about the accommodation and surrounding areas (restaurants, day trips etc) to Katherine and Arthur who meticulously answered each one. They were both so friendly and welcoming. They have two lovely dogs and two cats that live in the main house. I stayed in the Uitsig guesthouse which is above the garage. I believe it was renovated 12 months ago. Everything looks new, there is even an i-pod docker. Uitsig is smaller (and cheaper) than the other guesthouses but closest to the breakfast room and back-door. I live in London and it was nice to have so much space in a room and bathroom. The complex is well maintined with a small water feature and stunning views of the nearby Franshhoek Pass mountainside. Your washing is also done for free! You leave whatever you need washed in the bathtub in the morning before you go out and it is returned to you within 24 hours. There is an ironing board and tea and coffee making facilites in the room. All appliances are clean and well-kept (they looked new). They provide lovely Charlotte Rhys toiletries which is a brand from Cape Town. Breakfast is included in the room rate and it was superb. Katherine even shared her family's home-made museli recipe with us. The bed was comfortable and the duvet, sheets and blanket (off-white light blanket not the fuzzy brown one you get in some hotels) were very clean. The only thing they did not provide was slippers but the floor was clean and it was tile not carpet so it was OK (plus I always carry my own). Everything about this place was superb (breakfast, location, cleanliness, friendliness, local knowledge of hosts etc). You will not be disappointed if you book at Akademie.

We have just returned from two weeks in South Africa and one of the highlights was definitely Akademie Guesthouse. The cottages are gorgeous (we stayed in two - having booked for only one night had to stay for another in the largest and most expensive one) and are more impressive than the website photos. We stayed in other impressive guesthouses too but it was the attention to detail that set it apart for us, from iPod docking to quality of amenities to the great breakfast and the always helpful advice and information.

If you can bear to leave the comfort and go out, it happens to be in a great location near the main street and wonderfully quiet for all that.

We would have no hesitation in returning there again, and recommending it to our closest friends.

We stayed at one of the guesthouses of this wonderful establishment in August 2008. The decore of the house we had was lovely, with a lot of attention given to every detail. It was comfortable, unique and beautifully appointed. Lots of nice treats - complimentary sparkling wine, fruit and snaks, high quality toiletries, lots of candles- made our stay very special. There was even a docking station for our iPod as well as a selection of CDs and DVDs. Our breakfast was very good, made to order with most things on offer being home made and locally sourced. Breakfast was also beautifully presented. The only slight downside- the breakfast venue (the conservatory of the main house) felt somewhat temporary. Highly recommended to anyone looking for top luxury and quality with unique character.

What a find these guesthouses were! We thoroughly researched our trip to SA, and it certainly paid off. We stayed in Gelatenheid which is an amazing property, with lots of attention to detail, and huge rooms. The guesthouses are also particularly well situated with the best restaurants in Franschhoek just 5 minutes walk away.

We stayed in Vruegde guesthouse for 2 nights in August, and we wished we could have stayed there for longer! Vruegde was small only in comparison to the other houses, but certainly large enough to be comfortable for the two of us, with a large bathroom, and great outdoor deck and garden with private plunge pool. Breakfast each morning was delicious, especially the homemade granola, yogurt and fruits (and after we stuffed ourselves with that, we forced down delicious eggs, bacon and toast). Katherine and Arthur were wonderful hosts and you could tell that they really enjoyed what they did. We also enjoyed playing with Elsie and Woof, the resident dogs. We especially appreciated the small touches that made the stay so pleasant - free drinks (water, wine and spirits) and fruit and snacks in the rooms, heated towel racks, a flatscreen tv (which we never turned on, but was nice to have), a cellphone for our use during our stay, etc.
