“Excellent boutique hotel and guesthouse”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

We spent 2 nights in the Uitsig room (amazing), overlooking the little courtyard with ancient wine and a lovely view of the mountains. The sense of art appreciation and love of books was felt in this warmhearted place. It is really rich in atmosphere, luxury, peace and privacy and a perfect setting for the wine lands. Everything was perfect, breakfast was excellent. Katherine, Arthur and Hazel (and the dog Anna) were such great hosts. We will definitely be back when we visit Franschhoek again.

Room Tip: Uitsig room is very comfortable and gives a lot of privacy

We arrived to this beautiful part of SA and this beautiful hotel, it is absolutely gorgeous and Hazel is just wonderful, great advise about where to go and what to do as we were only there one night. We had to leave early in the morning so we didn't get to experience the full delight of the breakfast but what we did receive was attention to detail, kindness and it was truly lovely. The fridge was stocked with all lovely drinks you could have free of charge and snacks available also, The bathroom was filled with the most homely of items from fluffy towels, to bath salts to everything you could ever need. It was a little gem and would definitely visit again.

Room Tip: The lodge a the back of the main house

Unfortunately we could only spent one night in the beautiful Akademie Street Boutique Hotel but although it was a short stopover we can highly recommend this place. Our room was very nice and we felt comfortable from the very first moment on. The warm welcome, the excellent breakfast (best breakfast we had during our 14day trip through ZA) and the very nice location are something we will never forget. We will for sure come back for a longer stay.

From the moment we stepped into Akademie the sense of art appreciation and love of books was felt. The decor of Twyfeling, our balconied double storey house was special. The Illy Coffee machine, fridge filled with gratis bottled water, bubbly, beer and G&T's as well as fresh milk. Fluffy towels on heated towel rails, honeycomb dressing gowns and slippers and Charlotte Rhys bathroom range. Breakfast tables overlooking a little courtyard complete with ancient vine and water feature, delicious freshly squeezed fruit juices, fruit platters, handcrafted cheeses from the region and a selection of jams and konfyt with croissants. Hot breakfast comprised eggs of your choice, South African Farmer's sausage - boerewors made in neighbouring Paarl, crispy bacon and delicious mushrooms. Will definitely be back!

The first thing that strikes you is the attention to detail, be it the comfort of the bed, quietness in the property, artistic decor(both in rooms and near poolside),spacious bathrooms, choice of capsule coffee, most amazing fruits, luxurious breakfast and above all the warmth of owner, Catherine. Even though it was our first time to South Africa and after a 20 hour flight, she ensured we felt homely and settled immediately. Lovely spacious rooms and bathrooms (twyfeling b) and the glass chamber private sitout is just wonderful! A must stay for anyone staying over in Franschhoek! Best regards, Abhijit and Neha

Room Tip: Twyefeling B is superb

We stayed at the Akademie as the last leg of our honeymoon in early May 2013. Our first three stops were Londolozi, Rovos Rail, and Mt Nelson, and the Akademie was in the same level of comfort and a wonderful way to close things out. Just off the main strip in Franschhoek, the Akademie is within walking distance of everything in Franschhoek and a mention of the name of the B&B gives you instant credibility with all local restaurants and wineries. Katherine and Arthur have put together a wonderfully charming homestead that offers spacious and wonderfully appointed accommodations, wonderful service that imparts the feel of home, and a serene interior courtyard landscape with hidden nooks, fountains, and colorful foliage. The ever-dependable Hazel is there to answer your every whim, and you are greeted daily at breakfast by the house Labrador, Anna. We stayed in the two-story Gelatenheid townhouse, and with that, Katherine and Arthur have thought of absolutely everything!! Each level is exactly as you would have your home appointed, with access to your private pool, full kitchen, spacious bedroom in the upstairs full-floor “loft”, and a private tub on the second floor balcony. They provided a mobile phone, free of charge, already programmed with most eateries and wineries in the local area, which came in handy on more than one occasion. Gelatenheid has its own entrance and its own driveway and allows you to be as engaged or disengaged with the other guests as you want to be. Wineries such as Haute Cabriere and La Petite Ferme are literally 4 minutes away (if that), and Stellenbosch is roughly 25-30 minutes. The Akademie Guest House is perfect in that it allows easy access to the wineries by car, but also allows you to stroll around Franschhoek on foot in the early evening through all of the shops and restaurants. I found this little piece of paradise directly through Trip Advisor, so hopefully, this post will encourage others to stay at the Akademie in the same manner. It is entirely worth it and has earned every star of the rating. Simply fantastic.

Room Tip: Go for the Gelatenheid room. Two stories, private pool, private bath on second floor balcony, priva...

My wife and I spent five nights at the Akademie. We stayed in Ooirtgung Cottage (spelling probably not correct) which has a lot of history and is very charming; slightly secluded from the main house and other cottages it was perfect.

Katherine could not have been more welcoming or helpful, she gave us lots of useful and is clearly a font of all knowledge, not just about franschhoek but the surrounding areas too.

Breakfast was fantastic; plentiful (need to diet now) and a real treat.

Staff were friendly, including the resident furry-friend Anna (black lab).

If you are in Franschhoek on a Saturday morning I recommend the cellar tour at haute cabriere (recommended by Katherine to us). Achim con Armin is extremely entertaining and educational and you may even get chance to chop the top off a bubbly bottle with a sword.
