“Far beyond my expectations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2012

Akademie Street Boutique hotel and guest house far exceeded my expectations. It is SO beautiful. We were only there for one night, my boyfriend booked it and proposed to me that night, it was absolutely amazing! We got back from dinner and the whole top floor of the room was decorated with candles, roses, sunflowers (which are my favourite), there were even little wooden hearts hanging on the door handles. They made such a huge effort to make our stay the best, and I will never forget it. They even coordinated with the restaurant to let then know when we were having desert so that they knew what time to light the candles - now that's attention to detail!

The food is delicious and ownders are SO friendly and welcoming. The room we were in was huge and stunningly decorated, I was totally blown away. In fact, the hotel/guest house was the one thing that nearly gave away the secret of my boyfriend proposing, because when we checked in, I wondered whether we would be staying in such an amazing place if it was just a normal holiday :)

Anyone that goes to Franschoek HAS to stay at this place!

Room Tip: The room by the pool is magnificent!

I merely echo what the other reviews have stated here, without any reservations. Absolutely wonderful--the rooms, the service, the breakfast, and the hosts. My wife and I stayed in the Oortuiging room for two nights, and it was outrageously nice. We poked around the rest of the property, and the other rooms looked fine too, but we liked the space and privacy of our room.

The team at aka continue to provide first-class accommodation and service. This year was our third visit in a row, and I hope we'll return again next Summer.
Vreudge was again our choice, and remains a firm favourite for its big comfy bed, spacious bathroom and tranquil private garden.
Good luck to Arthur, Katherine and their wonderful staff for another successful year ahead.

You can't improve on perfection and we came back to Akademie because our stay there last year was perfect. So we decided to start our annual South African holiday at Akademie (bearing in mind that everything else is likely to pale into insignificance by comparison). This time, we stayed for 6 nights - and wished we could stay forever.

We had the same suite (Twyfeling B) and it felt like home immediately. A huge, comfortable bed. A great bathroom with separate shower, fluffy towels and excellent toiletries. And even - in the bathroom and in the suite - flattering mirrors (that one, I have no idea how they do it but they do). Wonderful reading lights everywhere. A twinkling fountain on the patio. A coffee machine with Illy coffee. A mini-bar with complimentary cold drinks and beer. Fabulous breakfasts (the most wonderful fresh fruit platter, a great cooked breakfast should you want it, perfectly poached eggs, fresh orange juice... a great start to each day).

But most of all, it's the friendliness of the place which is amazing. Hosts Arthur and Katherine are mines of information (whatever Arthur tells you to do, DO IT - last year, it was a drive across the Little Karoo desert on our way to Plettenberg Bay, which was historic. This year, he recommended the wine tasting at the Franschhoek Motor Museum - more prosaic but just as good). The Manager ,Hazel, is fantastic and made all our restaurant bookings (she knows exactly the type of food we like). And of course, there's Anna the dog - who went missing on New Year's Eve but was thankfully found the next day, having tried to escape the fireworks).

The pool is warm, the location perfect as you can walk to all the restaurants in the village and it's a short drive from other favourites, like La Motte, Moresons and La Petite Ferme. Frankly, we did not want to leave and have vowed - God willing - to come back.

This is THE place to go in Franschhoek, you won't be disappointed.

This place is heaven. It's like you're staying at a celebrity's cosy and meticulously maintained country home. Or perhaps it's like a set from a romantic comedy starring Scarlett Johansson set in the English countryside. Either way, that's just the PROPERTY.

The PROPRIETORS have thought of everything. I won't spoil the surprises, but I can't image a (potential) need that hasn't been considered. Very classy.

Room Tip: We stayed in the large stand-alone guest house. It was stunning.

Although we only spend 1 night at Akademie Street Guesthouse, we felt extremely welcome ! The garden pavilion we stayed in, is charming, luxurious and furnished with good taste. Keywords ? Privacy, willing and spoiling. The breakfast in the glasshouse was varied and complete. Both the owners and Hazel are very friendly, and helpful with tips for good restaurants or things to do... Without any doubt, an adress to remember ! We loved it,

We spent two nights in Franschhoek at Akademie Street in mid-December, and it was one of the highlights of our two week trip to South Africa. Before we arrived, our hosts recommended restaurants and were generally very helpful. Upon arrival, Hazel whisked us to our very lovely private cottage, showed us around the main house and property, and made us feel at home. Out cottage had everything we wanted--understated luxury is the best description I can think of--we had a free minibar, including a split of Cap Classique sparkling wine and local, fresh fruit. Our plunge pool was a bit chilly but we plunged--briefly--and it was quite lovely in spite of the temperature. Katherine and Arthur, our hosts, were great fun to talk with during breakfast. They also recommended a driver to take us around to several wineries, which was a perfect day. Highly recommend Akademie Street, and I hope we can return sometime soon!

Room Tip: As far as I can tell, they're all wonderful!
