“Felt more like staying in an elegant and comfortable home than a hotel of guesthouse”
Reviewed May 31, 2011

Four friends had an entire house (Twyfeling) for the duration of the Franschoek Literary festival, complete with library and conservatory. It was the loveliest house, solid, comfortable, luxurious, beautifully proportioned, with decor and furniture that felt personal. Even the books were well-thumbed and well-loved. We got the feeling that everything in the house had meaning, hence the sense of being in a home, not a hotel. Not that there was any stinting whatsoever on the luxury, the impeccable, discreet, yet ever-attentive service.

As we were friends, we all breakfasted together in the private conservatory of Twyfeling B, and it was possibly the best part of the day. The fruits were from a Persian paradise -- figs and pomegranates, the granola so glorious we begged a recipe. We looked out over lemon trees and a fountain and planned our day and shared adventures. It was extremely special, and a memory that will last.

I fell in love with a painting in our suite -- the bathing woman a la Renoir -- don't miss it, or the tromp d-oeile bathroom door.

Our friends who stayed in Twyfeling A loved their glass-roofed bathroom -- they enjoyed the space so much they refused to go out on Friday night, and stayed in to potter round the house!

Room Tip: Twyfeling A for honeymooners

"Never go back" is a well known travel saying as things may not be what they seemed before.

There is another old saying, "there's an exception too every rule" and Akademie is certainly an exception to the never go back

Arthur and Katerine (ably assisted by Hazel et al including Anna the dog) continue to maintain the just about perfect guesthouse. Gelatenheid was as wonderful as before and the breakfasts remain just as legendary. In fact nothing seemed to have changed at all !

The only bad thing about the Academie Hotel is that we are now spoiled for life. It will be very difficult indeed to find such a lovely room and wonderful hosts. Our teenage children adored having their own little cottage and adopted the dog - they felt right at home from the first moment. We also each enjoyed a bath in the outdoor bath on the veranda - what a luxury! The cottages are magnificently decorated, the beds divine and the fridge perfectly stocked. We enjoyed chatting with the owners and the staff over a delicious and complete breakfast. All in all, the stay was perfect!

Room Tip: There is no point. The rooms are all perfect.

An oasis of calm... We have just returned from a weekend, and have already booked 'same time, same place' next year. This will be our third return trip, and we love the beds, the linen, the staff, the breakfasts, location and the ultimate privacy that is offered. A beautiful home from home.

What a find! My husband and I have been lucky to have travelled the world so how lovely to be surprised by the charming Akademie St Hotel. We were welcomed by the owners Arthur and Gorgeous Catherine who have carefully created a very special and unique oasis. Most rooms are located in individual houses with their own secluded garden and plunge pool. they have thought of everything you could possibly require from nibbles to scented candles, champagne to an excellent choice of DVD's and specially compiled CD's. All the staff are charming and the breakfast is quite simply superb. Can't wait to return next year.

Room Tip: All the rooms are unique...

What a special place!
Everything was perfect and beyond all expectations: Oortuiging is very charming, spotlessy clean and extremely comfortable (entrance/living room, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchenette + dining room).
We were a bit worried because Oortuiging faces the street and we feared it would be noisy, but the only noise we heard were the squirrels walking on the roof :-)
Every detail has been carefully thought of: cell phone for guests with all useful numbers, well-stocked fridge, fresh fruit, CDs, DVDs, bathrobes and all possible amenities. Service is just perfect (we even had a shirt washed and ironed in less that 2 hours!), Hazel has an answer to anything you might ask and is extremely wiling to help. And breakfast is served in the main house in individual rooms - really a special way of making you feel pampered!
But the most special thing about this place is its character.
It's like being the guest of honour in a wonderful house which the hosts are proud to show and to share.

Room Tip: We stayed in Oortuiging and warmly recommend it!
