“Beautiful hotel”
Reviewed February 14, 2014

We had mainly stayed in some of the most fantastic guesthouses during our month's trip around South Africa, so we were not sure as to how the hotel would measure up. I booked a Standard Deluxe room but was a little concerned by earlier reviews saying they were dated. I had liaised with Celeske before our arrival about upgrading to a Luxury room, but they had none available. Nevertheless, The room we had was lovely (standard room 2) and had a very comfortable bed. It was large with a separate seating area and large French doors with probably the largest terrace of any of the rooms, luxury or otherwise. There were sun loungers as well as a table and chairs provided, which was great, as we had a wonderful view over the gardens to the dramatic mountains beyond. The bathroom was a good size though no separate shower. I love very modern decor and knew from the title, that this would be more of a country style which it was, but very tasteful and charming, if a little in need of a little updating, being slightly critical. However this did not impinge upon our enjoyment at all and I would definitely recommend.

The gardens are pretty and have two very nice pools.

The service was superb at breakfast and a 5 star breakfast in every respect. We had dinner in the restaurant and that was superb too, with excellent and very personable service. Victoria was a little star as were her colleagues, whose names we didnt know. The Manager and his Assistant were very visible and very attentive. Certainly exceeded my expectations and was a 5 star experience.

Room Tip: Room 2 Standard room

We found this place by chance and what a little gem! The staff were very accommodating in fitting us in for lunch. We sat inside for a few drinks near the bar which was very comfortable and cool. We were then sat outside in the gardens next to a beautiful water feature. We were served by excellent and enthusiastic staff who were attentive and helpful. The lunch itself was delicious, light and a delight. Halfway through the head chief came out and enquirer about our lunch. This was unexpected and a lovely touch. We were all very impressed by this country house.

We, that is my wife and I, stayed here for 6 nights in the latter half of January. It had been two years since our previous visit, and naturally we wondered if there had been any changes in that time. Of course, there had been. A few familiar faces among the staff had disappeared and a few new ones had arrived, but we were glad to see that the majority were still in place. What had not changed at all was the commitment from the entire staff to ensure that guests have a restful and enjoyable stay. That has been our experience every time we have stayed there.

The rooms, as usual, were of excellent quality, clean and regularly-serviced, comfortable and large (we were in one of the suites). The grounds – just as lovely as ever. The food – just as lovely as ever. The service – just as lovely as ever!

Now, anybody could have written this review so far – any of the hundreds of satisfied customers who pass through the hotel in a year – but here is something that will make this one a little bit different. On the day before we were due to leave, my wife and I were involved in a rather unpleasant incident. Not at the hotel. Not in Franschhoek. Not even anywhere near Franschhoek. But it did result in my wife being very shocked and my having had to have some hospital treatment. After the incident, we drove back to the hotel and mentioned what had happened.

You cannot believe how concerned, supportive, helpful and just plain lovely the staff of the hotel were. They were absolutely fantastic and went right out of their way to make us feel comfortable and to console us. This was true from housekeeping to waiting staff to management level. We could not have had better attention from them if we had been members of their families. That brought home to me what I had always suspected – that the staff of the hotel are more than a superbly well-trained team. They genuinely DO care about their customers and that is precisely why, when I return to Franschhoek in, I hope, the not-too-far-distant future, there is only one place I would consider staying – the Franschhoek Country House.

Room Tip: We stayed in a suite. Loads and loads of room and a nice balcony.

We spent a very comfortable two nights at this establishment.

Our room was comfortable and adequate, but i was a little disappointed as i thought the room i had booked had a balcony.

For me the outstanding feature was the staff.

One of the negatives of the hotel is the fact that it is quite some way outside the main part of Franschoek on the main road, but the courtesy bus service provided is fantastic - taking you wherever you need whenever you need and mostly driven by the managers.

The staff around the pool are so helpful and attentive, but for me it was the men and ladies in the Monneaux restaurant who were fantastic. We had friends visiting and merely wanted a glass of wine and a snack with them and didn't realise we were actually in the lounge area for the restaurant,
Despite having a full restaurant, they said if we were patient they would make some sandwiches for us - and they were terrific......Thank you all

An excellent buffet table for breakfast and smiling staff.
All in all a charming hotel

This is a well appointed, charming place with great finishes. The villas are very spacious. We spent two nights in one of the villas enroute to Robertson. There was enough room for a family of 4. The Dining room offers such a wide variety of food that most of it is grown in the areas. The dining area is huge and gives you a great view of the outdoors. The staff is very friendly and professional. The Spa has great treatments and worth a visit.

Room Tip: The Franschhoek Valley can be extremely hot in summer, so make sure you bring along lots of sunscree...

We spent three nights here, in a Villa, with friends who also stayed in a Villa during a two week trip to Cape Town. We spent the rest of the time at the Mount Nelson Hotel, two totally different experiences! The Franschhoek Country House and Villas is a beautiful, charming small hotel with huge comfortable rooms and the most helpful, courteous staff. The views are stunning and the grounds are delightful and very peaceful. We used the courtesy transport into the town centre, which always seemed to be available and we never waited for more than ten minutes to be collected on our return. We ate twice in the restaurant, although we had only planned to eat there once but the food was so good, probably some of the best cooking in the Cape, that we had to go back a second time. This is not a large, noisy, glitzy hotel and if that's what you're looking for then it's not for you but if you want the most restful, relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings and with delightful staff then book now!

We stayed here on honeymoon recently and we just had such a fantastic time. The hotel is extremely well appointed, the food both at breakfast and dinner in the restaurant was the best we had in any of the hotels we stayed in. The pool was well kept with great service from the waiter on duty. The quality of the spa treatments was very high. The rooms are really lovely and very comfortable. I would have no reservations about recommending this hotel. Hopefully we'll be back!
