Owner description: Agriculture and a simple farm lifestyle is at the heart of Boschendal. One of the oldest farms in South Africa, founded 1685, the farm has grown with the passing centuries into a cherished source of wholesome produce, great wines and happy memories. Set in the Drakenstein Valley surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, lush gardens and vines, the original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich and intriguing history of more than 300 years. Today, Boschendal is a Cape winelands icon and a cherished wine and food destination. Our vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle reflecting our commitment to serving wholesome farm-to-table food. Guest accommodation is also a recent addition to the farm with luxurious cottage accommodation ranging from the exclusive and historic Rhodes Cottage built by Sir Herbert Baker to the elegantly restored Werf Cottages. Cottage guests enjoy access to the entire farm where they can walk and cycle on trails through mountain fynbos, dine under the stars, have picnics and sundowners in exclusive areas, fly-fish in the dams and swim in pristine mountain water.

Great experience at the winery where we tasted lots of different wines explained by the sommelier.
The location is great, you have nice views outside and can enjoy a glass of wine while looking at the vineyard. Great time to have with friends there

“Beautiful place but visit is too short”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

Boschendal is a beautiful winery, with victorian buildings, located on the way from Franschoek to Stellenbosch.
It has good wines and a good and simple way to choose the wines to be tasted. By the way, good wines.

I thought the visit too short and there was little explanation about the type of wines they have.

Good to go, but not a must.

“Boschendal Cellar Door...a beautiful place for wine tasting...”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Sit under the old oak tree, and take the chocolate and wine taste pairing that Boschendal have just launched. A real treat. With a great explanation of the tasting notes.

“Get the real winefae feeling”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I did the winetasting couple of years ago and it was great. In 2008 we attended a picnic concert there which was outstanding.
For two years( 2012,2013) in a row now I did the Cape Argus mountainbike race there. One of the motivations is the beauty of the place. It remains one of my favourite farms. Apparently it is the oldest wine farm in the Cape.
The oak trees and the hydrangeas in summer is a picture on its own.

“Large estate, very quiet in winter”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Of all the wineries we visited, this was the quietest and seemed a little in need of tlc. It's a huge business and has wine that is readily available in the UK. The main house was very interesting to visit. Subsequently I read up on the history in a beautiful book bought from the gift shop - very interesting indeed. I think it would be better visited in the summer - it didn't compare as well with other wineries we visited in winter but I respect what they are doing to sustain the valley.
