“Very interesting ...”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

Learnt a whole lot about Huguenots which was really interesting and certainly wasn't short of information.
Perfect to while away a couple of hours when you've had enough wine tasting.
Lots of reading of information boards, so probably not the most interesting place for young kids.
But overall, an excellent background on the area.

“WORTHY OF A VISIT”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

Whether visiting another city or another country, a visit to local museums is a must. So, the next time you're in Franschhoek (lit. French Corner), make sure you visit the Huguenot Memorial Museum. There is so much interesting history to be gleaned!

It is common knowledge that the Huguenots were forced to flee from France to escape religious prosecution. They settled in various parts of the world, including Franschhoek. They brought with them their skills, including that of viticulture and named their wine farms after the area from whence they came. Some of these farms, with their original names, still exist today!

It is truly fascinating to trace the origins of so many of local surnames which we take for granted. It must give people a tremendous sense of pride to have surnames such as Cronje, De Villiers, Du Toit, Fouche, Roussouw, Viljoen and many others and be able trace one's ancestry to the arrival of the Huguenots.

By the way, the little shop in the Museum has some interesting momentos for visitors to buy. My wife found the place mats very reasonably priced!

“A french corner in the Cape”

The museum gives good insight into life in the early days in the Cape Colony and the history of the French Huguenot settlers in their plea to escape religious persecution in their homeland
