Owner description: This historic estate was originally part of the great La Provence farm given to French Huguenot farmers in 1694. Over the years the property was divided and the portion which is now Rickety Bridge was granted to Paulina De Villiers, one of the first female land owners in South Africa, in 1797. In the late 1980's the estate became known as Rickety Bridge due to the old railway sleeper bridge which crossed the Franschhoek River and provided the entry point to the estate. The rickety bridge was replaced in 1996 and the new bridge provides a safe crossing over the river. Today, Rickety Bridge is a stately Franschhoek winery which has gone from strength to strength in recent years and the memory and pioneering spirit of Paulina De Villiers is celebrated by the flagship range of wines, Paulina's Reserve. These distinctive wines, as well as the renowned Rickety Bridge classic range and the Foundation Stone Range, have received many accolades and high praise in recent years.

We had a delicious lunch at the new restaurant “Paulinas” at Rickety Bridge.
We started with the mussels in a cream and wine sauce which was excellent.
For mains we had the line fish which was cob (rather like halibut) served with little cubed potatos in a leek & herb puree. It was REALLY good.
For dessert we ordered the chocolate trio and the assiete of berry desserts. All ecelent.
This has to be one of the nicest lunch venues in Franschhoek situated amongst the vines with lovely mountain views.
Service was excellent and the Maitre’d Garth excels at supervising staff seemingly with an invisible cord.
Highly recommended, we will deffinately return.

Isn't it strange how different two consecutive reviews can be. We arrived by the wine tram and the truck through the vines and were made hugely welcome. It was our third tasting of the day and so very different from the others. We were sat down on the terrace with views over the vines and given 4 wines to taste with a full explanation to support the tasting followed by questions and answers thoroughly professional. So different to the DIY versions of tastings we had experienced earlier. Then we went over to the restaurant for lunch and enjoyed superb burgers (no sign of horse!!) and another very good wine. Overall a very satisfactory experience. We had two nights here and had we known about Rickety Bridge in advance would have come here for dinner as well. First class, give it a try.

We recently got married here on 7/1/13. Cannot express our gratitude for all the help and input from everyone involved! It was the most fantastic day from start to finish, made possible by all the complete attention to detail from Joanna and her team. The venue was beautifully decorated, and everything that we had asked for was in place. The catering was spectacular, with a great choice of food, ( I especially recommend the ostrich!) and the wines perfectly complimented all the courses. If you are thinking of getting married in Sth Africa, this definitely is the place to do it! Thanks again to Joanna( the dancing queen!), Garth, and a word to the wise, avoid Jeremiah the barman's variety of very pretty looking but extremely lethal cocktails!! ( my son, Tom, still hasn't had a drink since the wedding!). Overall rating 11/10!!! Simon and Denise xx

I've enjoyed Rickety Bridge wine tasting when I've been there in the past, but wasn't impressed when I went there over the weekend. The lady who helped us with wine tasting didn't explain any of the wines to us and didn't really seem to care.
My salad at the restaurant was nice, but my partner's steak was slightly on the tough side. Again, the service wasn't good. The staff were all sitting around a table chatting and eating their lunch and obviously didn't care that there were customers.
We also had a variety of different people helping us. Our original waitress went off her shift without telling us - we passed her waiting for her lift as we were driving out - and forgot to provide us with the ordered glass of wine and the G&T. When we wanted the bill, they seemed a bit annoyed when we asked for the card machine. I wouldn't go back there in a hurry simply because of the service.
