Owner description: Discover the Vineyards of Franschhoek. The Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour is one of the best ways to discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley - picturesque vineyards, breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300-year history. Tour Experience: Passengers aboard the hop-on hop-off tour will experience a unique and leisurely introduction to the Franschhoek Valley as they journey through rolling vineyards in an open-side tram and open-air tram-bus stopping at some of South Africa's oldest and most distinguished wine estates. A combination of tram and tram-bus follows a loop of stops allowing guests to hop off at each stop and experience the activities on offer, such as wine tasting, a cellar tour, lunch or simply a stroll through the vineyards. When ready guests simply hop on to continue the tour. The tour takes guests into the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, with a guided commentary and unparalleled views of the valley and vineyards. Ticket prices: R170 - R220

This is a great idea and was a bit of fun, and was actually a mix of open bus, tram, something pulled by a tractor and a truck, but meant not having to drive and being able to enjoy the wine tasting, and certainly wasn't expensive. Four of the vineyards visited did free tasting, and the food at Rickety Bridge was fab. I'd certainly recommend this.

The tram takes you to some good wineries where sampling is the order of the day and no driving to follow! It's not quite what it purports to be because the "tram" ride is more limited than the publicity suggests. Having said that, it's a lot of fun and not expensive. Is it worth doing - oh yes!

This idea is fabulous if you are staying in Franschhoek especially if a driver. The vineyards that you visit are fabulous - Grand Provence has a lovely gallery showing local artists and the wine is lovely. Rickety Bridge has amazing views and the cheese platter along with the wine tasting is amazing. The bus takes you along to 5 more vineyards, all different in their own way. We recommend lunch at either Rickety Bridge or Chamonix - both fabulous. Educational and a great way to spend time in the winelands. A great idea and well recommended!

We decided to opt for the wine tram rather than taking a minibus tour round the wine region. We were a little apprehensive that we would be taken to only the easiest and maybe not the bet vineyards, how wrong we were. The staff at the booking centre, on the bus, the tram and at all the vineyards were fantastically helpful and friendly and the vineyards we visited were first class. Lunch at La Provenance was a particular highlight. We cannot recommend this experience more strongly... a really superb day

Got the tram early at 10.40am and visited Dieu Donné. Waitress was a bit miserable and didn't make us feel particularly welcome but what a view! And the wine was delicious - especially the merlot. Moved onto the train - really quaint - and headed for Rickety Bridge. Excellent welcome from a very knowledgeable young lady and tasted some fantastic wines accompanied by a tasty cheese platter which helped soak up the wine. Some quirky souvenirs on sale and although we hadn't intended to buy wine because of the hassle of getting it home safely in hold luggage, the young lady proved to be very persuasive and a great saleswoman! Final stop La Provence; quaint journey from the train to the tasting room. Fantastic setting; interesting sculpture and art exhibition and a fine restaurant. The free wine tasting for wine tram passengers was a bit out of the way by the shop and the lady who normally does this had her day off but a young man from the shop looked after us and did a great job. Not greatly knowledgeable about the wines but polite, made a great effort and used the literature he had to tell us about the wines.

All in all we had a great day out, tasting some fantastic wines, enjoying the beautiful scenery and meeting some delightful people; the staff on the tram/train were charming. Well worth the R130.
