“The perfect place to be. We hope that there will be always a place for us in this paradise.”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

Shirley and Joe started this B & B early January 2012, so everything is brand-new, beautifully designed and furnished, beds are wonderful to sleep in, personnel is really taking care of you in a personal way, they really like you!

It is a wonderful B & B.
At breakfast they pamper you. I am not a big breakfast eater, I take some bread, honey, orange jus and coffee and I feel wonderful. Shirley however is a professional cook (she had her own cooking school in Joburg, she wrote books about cooking), she loves good food and she wants to share that with you, so in the morning she wants to cook something for you, she tells you that she has wonderful trout, from the mountain waters nearby, fresh fruit from the farm next door, fresh eggs, etc. It is not a sale talk; she just wants to give you a wonderful breakfast, in fact a wonderful start of your day. What a pleasure to be treated that way.

It is worth talking with them, because they are very interesting people with lots of knowledge and experience in different areas.

This is what Fransvliet is “The perfect place to be”.

We were here in October 2012; we will stay there again in January 2013. We hope that there will be always a place for us in this paradise.

Initial impressions are good with the manicured gardens and pristine pool with comfortable pool furniture. The rooms are new with a modern layout and many extras to give that upper class impression. Heated floors, heated towel racks, fireplace, iPod docking station, LCD TV, DVD Player, Nespresso Coffee Machine, Air conditioner...to name a few. Rooms are ample, even with the pull out couch and the bathrooms are stunning. Very bright, very clean, excellent quality all round. Not many units so there is still that feel of personalised service from the hosts. We are already planning our next visit.

We stayed for only a night in this very pleasant property and friendly owner Shirley who was very helpful in giving advice and cooking a wonderful breakfast. It is located near great vineyards and restaurants.

Fransvliet was originally our "stopping off" point during a week of hectic wedding recce around Franschhoek, but having been there for just a few hours, we were completely relaxed, comfortable and happy.
The bedrooms are gorgeous -sumptious bedding of the highest quality Egyptian cotton, large mattress and a bathroom i'd give my right arm for in London! A Double bath with a bottle of delicious wine - who could ask for more?
Well then it gets on to Shirley and Jo and Victor - what a team!! This lovely lady knocked us over with her enthusiasm and warmth, so much so that they will be joining us at our wedding. Now if that is not a ringing endorsement I don't know what is. They felt like family almost immediately.
The food is delicious, great portions, as much as you wanted and all overlooking lovely vines and the fresh swimming pool.
We were lucky enough to be there with the Dutch couple below and had such fun together.
This truly is a place to relax, sleep, eat and explore the wine region and with a hostess that makes you smile and laugh. I can't wait to be back and am quietly envious of those of our family who are staying there during our wedding celebrations in Feb.
Well done all of you - keep it up!!

The 5 guest suites are beautifully furnished. Very decadent: under floor heating, amazing bathroom, high comfy beds, TV, WiFi and even an iPod docking station. There is a pool for the guests which we didn't use as it was a bit fresh but looked well maintained. Victor arranged a dinner booking for us on our first night including sorting out transportation for us. He is a gentle, efficient man whose face lights up when he is talking about the guest house and area. We met Shirley at breakfast the following day. We were sat on the verandah over looking the gorgeous scenery when a golf buggy whizzes round. 2 dogs scamper up to say good morning followed by Shirley in lively chatty form. Breakfasts were fantastic. Don't expect a menu. You are given options depending on whatever she has in the kitchen or has just bought. She provided us with brilliant recommendations of vineyards to visit for tastings as well as organising a booking for lunch at Overture (Hidden Valley Vineyard restaurant). Without her suggestion and maps we would have never stumbled across Overture and what an amazing experience it was. Definitely recommend staying here.

Shirley Kilian's Fransvliet was the final stop in our 20-day tour of SA, before ending in Cape Town; it suited us well, since we wanted to wind down from the previous activity-filled days, consequently spending 3 nights here; we took 2 rooms: one for us and our 8-yr old, the other for our grown-up daughters; the rooms are very spacious with a delightful bed, a gorgeous and vast bathroom (including a bath and a shower) and a closet area; the rooms' front overlook the mountains, while behind the house lie rows and rows of grapevines, and more beautiful mountain scenery; we were greeted each day with Shirley's cheerful smile and her sumptuous breakfast, after which we felt recharged to take on the area's attractions, using the excellent location of the place as a base point from which to explore the Franschhoek area: don't miss the exquisite La Motte Wine Estate (just 500m from Fransvliet) and should you want to wander a bit farther away, Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West is a gem; needless to say Franschhoek is a treat in itself and we felt lucky to stay here for 3 nights having an ample chance to sample the many restaurants on offer; in sum: an excellent choice of stay in the Franschhoek area; thanks again Shirley!

We were one of the first couples to stay at Fransvliet last December. Marcel, my boyfriend, had never been to South Africa and I thought it would be lovely to show him Franschhoek. Thank goodness we chose Fransvliet because it was fantastic - they don't miss one trick! From the stylishly decorated rooms, to the lovely pool, the necessary Nespresso machine (for Marcel a pièce de résistance) and iPod docking station! Of course, Shirley's breakfasts are phenomenal and Victor's service & smile are spectacular. And the price is very reasonable!

The only downside is that we only had time for one night! Hope to see you again soon!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Fransvliet Guest House is a tranquil, luxury retreat, only 4 kilometres from the heart of Franschhoek. It is situated on a working farm, growing grapes, olives and figs. Wake up to the call of the birds and in the evening perhaps hear the resident owls calling as they contemplate the night's hunt. Breathtaking mountain views are all around, each one more spectacular than the last. The individually decorated suites are pure luxury, with absolute attention to detail. Soft wineland colours set the tone for a perfect stay. Breakfast is an occasion, every day. Spend time in the newly renovated 65 year old house, either inside or on the veranda, enjoying the view of the pool and the vineyards. Celebrate "the best meal of the day" with either a Continental or a full breakfast that will include seasonal specials. The sparkling pool is at your disposal for those hot lazy afternoons. Relax in the shade with a magazine and an ice cold drink, before you cool off. Lazy winter days are a treat too. Snuggle up in your suite in a comfy armchair with your own personal fireplace - the perfect way to enjoy one of the local bottles of red wine. Meander through the garden, (both indigenous and other) on your way to your suite. Something special will be flowering at all times. In season, luscious figs will be found on the trees, and the scent of lemons may be in the air too. Take an early morning walk around the farm in December. The vines will be green and laden with fruit. In July, a few burgundy coloured leaves and bare sticks have their own attraction. Soak up the 360° view, especially the powerful Simonsberg mountains. ... more   less
