A great alternative route back to Cape Town is to go over Franschoek Pass and via Grabouw/Elgin. Stunning views, good road.

Well-maintained road with most cambers on the hair-pins going the right way. However, watch out for one or two going the opposite way! Quite a few parking opportunities with spectacular views, especially at the top. A must if you're visiting Franschhoek for the first time.

Decided on early morning to ride this route on my mountain bike. It was great. Not for the faint hearted as the climb is 7km to the top. The road is in good condition and there are many spots to stop and take in the view of the Franschhoek Valley.

I took the road to the Dam on the other side and back to town, which was about 30km. The road is narrow with lots of sharp bends. The valley is beautiful with a wonderful array of plant species. A great place to go walking in the cool time of the day.

This pass is well worth the effort of experiencing. Coming from Cape Town, take the 4 passes route and start with Sir Lowry's pass outside Somerset West, then Viljoen's pass, Franschhoek Pass and Helshoogte Pass down to Stellenbosch on your way home. The road winds and climbs and gives stunning views of the countryside, the dam and Franschhoek valley.
