This wine tour with Aylmer started out well with visits to two wineries. Aylmer, the the guide was knowledge about the wines and the local area. However, the recitation of local facts was matter of fact and could have been being played from an audioguide.

Disappointment at lunch - Petit Ferme. Shown to inside table, not even terrace, and right next to kitchen. Stuffy, noisy, cramped. I refused to eat under such conditions. Eventually I asked to pay the tour bill and returned to my guest house. Another table for "found" on the terrace but my then the experience had left a sour taste for the process.

These tour groups are used in part because they make superior arrangements with properties such as Petit Ferme. Not in this case.

We arranged our tour with Danélle beforehand because we wanted to make sure she was available. Why? Because she is not only a fountain of knowledge when it comes to wine but she is also great fun and a wonderful host!

This was the 2nd time we chose La Rochelle Wine Tours, the last trip being 3 years ago. We had a blast back then and that's what we came back for - and just how right we were! We immensely enjoyed another marvelous adventure through the Franschhoek Valley and its incredible wineries.

Thanks for a fabulous day and sharing your love for the region and its wines with us again, Danélle!

Hope you can face us coming back - cos we will :)!

Big hugs from good old Europe

We normally do a lot of homework before booking an activity or hotel. In this case I will admit that we let our hotel do the booking and it could not have turned out better. What sets La Rochelle apart is the tour guide.

They will tell you when you schedule that the wineries are selected once everyone has been picked up. This is not a ploy to take you to some pre-determined wineries that you may not have desired before signing up. They do this so they can hear where everyone has already been and select the best options of the area that have not been visited. We had already visited two very nice and highly recommended wineries the day before so this allowed our guide Alymer to pick some others based on our wine preferences, nostalgia and places we had not visited.

Alymer was not your typical bus driver. He was not only incredibly knowledgable on the history of the area, people and land but was also quite the wine expert himself. As he drove us from each winery he gave us information related to the local people, history of South Africa, local business, current events and more. I also asked a lot of questions to see if the information was coached or not. I found it difficult to ask anything he could not answer. As we entered each winery Alymer would give us the history of the wine, take us around the property and sit with us to describe what we might be tasting and foods that might compliment each wine.

We ended up visiting 4 wineries including the one at lunch at. Lunch is not included but Alymer will ask what you might be in the mood for and select appropriately. All of your wine tastings are included which for us was well worth the cost considering the service and wines we were able to try throughout the day. Alymer was prompt to pick us up in the morning and had us back on time. We shared the tour with another couple which we enjoyed their company.

This company really does offer a great personalized tour. We would do it again.

Having arrived in Franschhoek on saturday afternoon, and needing to be in Capetown on monday morning, left us with only sunday to take a wine tour... Not ideal!

Danelle was recommended to us by a local shopkeeper, and collected us within 20 minutes of making the call. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and went out of her way to make sure we got a tour we would enjoy (not just some set-list itinerary trotted out every day by someone bored out of their mind!). Her enthusiasm was contagious, and she seems to have a good working relationship with the vineyards she brought us to, one of which was closed altogether on sundays and received us specially at her request!

There was no strict timetable, which allowed us to keep an arranged lunch reservation, and take our time at it, which was brilliant. There was one other couple on the tour with us, and Danelle took them on to their own lunch booking, before meeting up with us for the afternoon part of the tour.

I gather there are cheaper ways to tour Franschhoek (as long as its not a sunday...), but for the few extra rand I would highly recommend a private/semi-private tour like ours with Danelle and La Rochelle Tours. You wont be disappointed!

After 12 days of safari, Capetown, climbing to peaks of interest (Cape of Good Hope, and more), we were ready for a complete shift to the cooler climate and vineyard heaven. We were not disappointed. Not only was our acccomodations with Akademie Street Guest House superb, but their recommendation of La Rochelle Wine Tours was spot-on. Danelle is high-energy (great for weary tourists), knowledge and respect for the winemakers' skills, and intuitively tuned in to the needs and preferences of her clients. I would love to travel more countries with her and get to know more fabulous wine from small wineries. We simply were not disappointed with any moment of the day!
