Description: The name of the restaurant was inspired by La Motte's admiration of South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886 - 1957). Pierneef's creativity in portraying the beauty of the South African landscape is echoed in the restaurant's offering of traditional cuisine with a modern interpretation. The restaurant interior blends beautifully with the external surroundings - a fresh, natural look inside is embraced by tranquil gardens and majestic oak trees - where a Winelands Tea with a selection of home-baked delights from the La Motte Farm Shop can be enjoyed. The exclusively arranged Pierneef a La Motte Chef's Table offers a fine-dine menu in line with guests' preferences, as pre-arranged with Chef Michelle Theron, as well as a harmoniously complementing wine selection

Blown away by the scenery after driving through the gate! After recovering we had a wonderful lunch in the beautiful outside area of the restaurant.

“Patchy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2014 via mobile

An alarming drop in standards over the past year, to the extent that this was the only visit of the holiday to this hitherto great place.

Not made to feel particularly welcome on a windy lunchtime, we had to sit outside and choose from a severely limited menu. Service was then haphazard to say the least.

Pie of the day was OK, nothing more.Shame.

“BON MOTES FOR LA MOTTE”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2014 via mobile

Another return visit, be it only twice a year, says it all as there is plenty of competition in and around Franshoek. The visit starts at the entrance gate which then opens out onto a sweeping drive up though the vines to the car park with stunning views of the mountains. Our visit was at lunch time, meaning 2 o/clock as we had not booked and as ever Pierneef was busy. The menu has been given a lot of thought so as to cater for international visitors as well as local South Africans. The result is an excellent choice with needless to say a truly memorable wine list. On this occasion the Pulled Wildebeest Dumplings were not as Mother made them as they say. They tasted as good, but were cooked so as not to be heavy lumps of dough! You can book a table inside the restaurant, outside in a conservatory style area or outside under the Oaks protected by a flying sale cloth. The manager and waiting staff do an excellent job of being attentive without being in your face like certain up market places. Being a Wi-Fi tart it was great to see no evidence of a system! They should now introduce a " Turn off or put on silent, cell phone policy". Shame about the beetle in the salad. But it was dead and I will be going back.

“Starters very good Main courses very Poor”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014 via mobile

Having been to La Motte before and recommending to a group of 8 friends I was very disappointed as were the whole group.
Service was very good and the starters excellent. The main courses were very poor, Fish not good Yellow Tail, Steak was supposed to have been aged sirloin, which turned out to be tough and was returned. The Short Rib Beef was a joke whoever is responsible for concocting this dish needs to rethink or take it off the menu, it was full of fat and very little edible meat. I feel very let down as you can see from my previous review I had no problem recommending, which is no longer the case. Date of visit 30th January 2014

“Poor Customer Service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

Went there today and had to stop at security at the gate, had to fill out a form, told the guard we wanted to have lunch at the restaurant, he asked if we had a reservation, we said no, he told us to proceed. Then we got to reception to learn it was sold out, no room. Why not tell the guard house that? Why waste my time driving in and out and filling out paperwork?

They don't want our business and they waste our time. We won't be back.

We apologise sincerely, it was not our intention at all to waste your time. La Motte wine estate has a variety of activities to offer. It is tricky to co ordinate between the gate and all of them (e.g. the wine tasting room and restaurant) on the minute updates when one of the facilities are full. We do understand your frustration and apologise - we will look into ways of improving that. Thank you for signing in at the gate. Signing in at the gate is for the protection of all the visitors at La Motte and although it takes a few minutes, it helps to protect everybody and it has proven in the past to be successful in identifying problems. Kind regards
