A fabulous meal tonight! Whilst the rain was falling Ryan & Lana gave us the best of the day with a gastronomic experience to remember! It was lovely to sit almost in their kitchen and watch the food unfold. Staff moved around efficiently producing great food under Head Chef & Owner Ryan who showed great finesse and humor with his menu! Babootie pancakes followed by tender Lamb and a finale of Blueberry Soufflé! What more can could one ask for! Lana ran the Resturant with charming efficiency whilst Ryan ran the kitchen impeccably! Definitely a place to recommend and will be returning at the first opportunity!

Top class in all respects from the carefully prepared and innovative menu, to the magnificent flavours of the final product. We had babootie, followed by duck and a magnificent blueberry soufflé.

Ryan is a highly professional chef and quietly unassuming type who is more wrapped up in his cooking than his customers, while his wife Lana runs the place with charm and yet military precision. Their prices are almost too low for on a wet Saturday night they only could take a maximum of about 26 covers and had to turn some away.

The restaurant is intimate and very friendly, but Ryan and Lana will do better still if they can grow whilst retaining their lovely home-made formula.

My issue with this restaurant is based on the frustration of having researched and contacted them months before our holiday. And with the efficiency of their administration I had high expectations.

This was the first meal that my husband was to enjoy with his brother whom he rarely sees (as they live on two separate continents). However, both sides of the family live in cities with good culinary offerings and so we were all looking forward to experiencing what the Gourmet Capital of South Africa had to offer

The restaurant looks lovely and the five chefs work tirelessly in a very small space

The wine list was good and we enjoyed a great pinotage
The amuse bouche was interesting (a watercress mousse with mushroom crumble topping served in a little pail)

From then onwards reactions were mixed:
- my in laws suggested that their dinner made them anxious at how fussy food might appear in Franschhoek) as they felt that the flavours were poorly integrated and it was a little style over substance) - although the meat dishes were deemed more successful than the fish
- the vegetarian offering that we had confirmed months in advance would be no trouble to provide consisted of a starter with the meat removed, so it lacked both a variety in texture and flavour, and half an aubergine stuffed with ratatouille that would be standard lunch fare in many British work canteens. Although beautifully presented, the lack of effort and imagination in these dishes was a surprise after the quality of food experienced elsewhere in this country, given the culinary reputation of this town and restaurant.

When we explained our issues the staff told us that they don't normally cater for vegetarians, which I would have accepted if we'd walked in, but given several month's notice was a poor excuse, as if they'd said that before we booked we could have tried to book elsewhere.

The food was very good and innovative with respective to flavour combinations. However we found the depth of flavours lacking and not as well balanced as you would expect given the high standard this restaurant obviously operates at. Glad we tried it but would not return for another visit.

My husband and I have just returned from South Africa and Ryan's Kitchen was the place we booked to have our night on our own.

This is a lovely, attractive and well situated restaurant in the centre of town and I have to say it was a very enjoyable experience. It is a small, intimate place, not for children,

The food was very tasty, accompanied by an excellent choice of wine . The staff were very professional. It was fascinating to see the chefs at work, however a smile or two and a bit if engaging with customers from the chefs was missing. My husband loves his food and wanted to complement the chefs personally but felt hr couldn't approach them. Just a minor point, but we would definitely go back.
