Blueberry Hill Cottages
Reviewed February 11, 2013

The cottages are comfortable and the setting really beautiful but be aware that there is no reception on the premises and apparently bookings are done through London. I would recommend getting a local phone number at the time of booking and then phoning when you are on your way so you can be sure someone will be there to meet you. It seems Claire ( who used to manage the cottages) has been a big loss- but I would go again. We stayed in Rose cottage but I would choose one of the others that had their own private garden area next time. The kitchen is not really kitted out for lots of cooking - but if you are staying in Franschhoek you will want to eat out - often!

Room Tip: Rose cottage opens right next to the pool but does not have any private gardens.

We had paid our 50 per cent deposit in September 2012 and cancelled at the end of that month. We were promised a refund as there was plenty of time to re let the cottage.
However despite numerous phone calls and emails the owner has refused to give a refund nor to send a cancellation notice stating that a refund is not available. T therefore we cannot claim the deposit of R10,500 from our insurance company.
We are now talking to the Consumer Protection people in south Africa.
Claire was so good but regrettably not there anymore so no one responds to calls or emails.
What a way to run a business!!!
Until the management responds to us and others in a sensible way it is probably better not to book with Blueberry Hill or Papillon cottage.

I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your booking at Papillon. We bought the Blueberry Hill property and are reviving the self catering cottages on this property. It is no longer linked to Papillon and hope that should you wish to stay here in the future you will consider Blueberry Hill cottages which much improved under our new management.

This is actually a review of a related property - Papillon cottage in Franschoek. We were offered Papillon because our friends were staying at Blueberry and Claire said the remainder of the properties there had already been rented out, but we could stay at Papillon. Papillon is actually a much better property - it appears recently renovated, to a high standard, with its own pool - whereas Blueberry was pretty tired this summer, and poorly equipped. Papillon doesn't have the views of Blueberry Hill, but it could really be the most idyllic stay if the service wasn't so dreadful. Claire has left, and it seems noone has really replaced her. Noone answered the phone the day we were due to arrive, so we didn't know how to get our keys. It was by pure chance that we bumped into the handyman at Blueberry Hill who had the keys. Nobody had cleaned the pool, and the equipment to clean it was broken, so we didn't use it while we stayed there. When a very friendly guy came to clean it on the second day he said he was unable to do so because there was no equipment. There was no info pack in the cottage, so we never found the boiler and had cold showers for the duration of our stay. The alarm went off a couple of times, again because we weren't told how it worked. Luckily the security service was prompt and very helpful. The only attempt to make contact with us by the managers (though we tried calling and calling the two numbers they provided and got no answer) was when they wanted the remainder of our payment. This is not a cheap property and definitely not worth the money. Final complaint is that the laundry (bed sheets and towels) smelt mouldy, so clearly had not been hung out to dry immediately.

Our family recently spent a long weekend at Blueberry Hill cottages. The setting is just beautiful with amazing views of the valley and mountains.
The cottages are clean, comfortable and well equiped and Claire was charming and most helpful.
It is easy walk to the main street with all its outstanding restaurants and quant shops.
We had a wonderful weekend wine tasting, cheese and wine pairing and food and wine pairing.
The cold wet weekend did not dampen our spirits as what better way to enjoy a fine bottle of wine but in front of a roaring fire.

Room Tip: We stayed in Olive cottage which suited our family of 5 perfectly.

Accommodation was very nice, clean and homely feel. I would recommend it for a nice weekend away. Good relaxing place with a nice fire place and braai area, hosts are very friendly and accommodating. The cottages have nice views of the valley and are very close to some nice wine farms and the town center.

Had an exceptional weekend at Blueberry Hill Cottages. One of the most extraordinary views and settings in Franschhoek. Claire was a wonderful host and we felt thoroughly spoilt on every level. Its a quick 1.5km walk into the village of Franschhoek which gave us some much enjoyed exercise.

I booked this lovely place from the web without checking out any review. My kids are at school at Franshoek and I wanted to spend a few days in the town to get a feel of what it is.

Claire our host was most kind and attentive and was very helpful about things to do in the town.
By the nature of my job I live half my life in hotels and my one concern was that of cleanliness of both rooms and the surroundings, U must say I have yet to stay at a cleaner and neat place in all my travels in southern Africa, as the blueberry. Everything from the fully fitted kitchen to the bedrooms beddings and heaters were functional and to our taste. My two children aged 16 and 12 had a marvelous time and I enjoyed every minute of our stay. If tranquility and an astounding surrounding is what you like, then this is the place to be. Claire is one host that is a tribute to the hospitality industry in Franshoek! I will come back again and again.
