I have lost count of the number of restaurants at which we have eaten dinner in Franschhoek but it must be around 20. Allora was by far the worst.
We started with half portions of pasta (rubbery spaghetti in a watery tomato sauce masquerading as bolognese) followed by two veal dishes (scaloppine al marsala and scaloppine al limone). The veal was tasteless. The "roast" potatoes accompanyng the limone were raw and the french fries accompanying the other had been dumped in an over-supply of watery so-called marsala sauce that reduced them to a sad, soggy state.
We should have given up at that stage but persevered with desert - a creme brulee and a semifreddo. The custard base of the creme brulee seemed entirely unflavoured. There was nothing semi about the semifreddo, which had the texture of a well-frozen icecream blended with something resembling breadcrumbs.
The online booking was made remarkably efficiently. The service (despite some linguistic challenges) was friendly and quick, but quite unable to redeem an exceptionally disappointing meal.
