I was eager to walk off the fine food ( and extra weight) so arranged for a permit to hike here. Permits are required. It is lovely place, and the view from the Vista Trail is well worth seeing. The hike up and back only takes about an hour but leave time to appreciate it all.

If you are looking for something different to do on a pleasant day in Franschhoek a hike in Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is recommended. For two people with the handy map and info guide cost R50. Permits can be bought at the Information Office in the centre of Franschhoek. Routes not always clearly marked but are pretty easy to figure out. The views along the way will make this an most enjoyable day out. Recommended to take your camera with for some truly magnificent photos of the Franschhoek valley.

Both half and full day hikes. Beautiful vistas 180 degrees; indigenous plants well maintained by removal of alien Australian wattles and eucalyptus and American pines. A permit must be purchased from the Tourism bureau for R20pp. Adequate parking and a well drawn up glossy brochure/map in colour is available.

We went to Mont Rochelle for some hiking, however due to the heat (again) and some sudden interruptions on the way, we didnt walk far.
The mountain is not very tall, and the hiking path is of good quality. Already when parking you get a panoramic view of the valley of Franschhoek and if lucky (as we were) you bump into a Paragliding school that are practising that day.

So, from a rather small cliff, there were around 15 paragliders doing their thing, and we stopped to watch..turning into wanting to fly. Berry from Franschhoek paragliding told us we could do a tandem jump for 950 €, but unfortunately the wind blew up and it was impossible to go that day (making us book it for Cape Town though that is another story).

We met some hikers on the way back that said the trail is very good and that it is easy to do it by bike aswell (which we often prefer). Next time we'll do that!

FYI there are 2 mountain bike companies in town, and do book in advance as they are popular!

The reserve offer a wonderful array of walk, varying in length and difficulty. If you are fit and like to walk fast you can halve the times estimated in the reserve map.
Paths are beautifully maintained and are very clearly marked.
If you are a bird watcher look out for the Cape Rockjumper. I saw quite a few on the walk to DuToitskop.
The views from DuToitskop are spectacular.
You will enjoy your hike.
