This is a moderate sized guest house, just of the main street. Many restaurants within walking distance.

The rooms are olde worlde, high ceilings, ensuite bathroom, and antique furnishings. Very welcoming.

The staff are very friendly, but there's no reception after 18h hours.

Small breakfast buffet, but with a choice of full English or a filled omelette in addition (but no price supplement)

No major criticisms, but the rooms are street level, and people can see into the rooms easily. some rooms have full shutters, and in time all rooms zill have shutters according to the management.

overall a no surprise choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with shutters

After traveling for 27 hours to get to South Africa from Los Angeles, we were met at the airport by David, one-half of the friendly management team -- along with his wife, Jenny -- of Le Ballon Rouge. David and Jenny made us feel instantly at home, offering tips for local restaurants and attractions. David later gave us a personal wine estate tour, and proved to be extremely knowledgeable. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the breakfast was very good. The location, right off the main street in Franschoek, is excellent. But, most importantly, David and Jenny's warmth, hospitality, and good spirits helped us get up to speed and get over our jet-lag.

Le Ballon Rouge is located a block back from the High Street so it is quiet but all Franschhoek bars, restaurants and attractions are easily accessible.
Our room was huge with four poster bed and a separate seating area. It was clean, well maintained and very tastefully decorated and furnished.
The rate was very reasonable for the standard of accommodation and included a full breakfast.
The standard of service was excellent - personal but professional.
We will definately be back to Franschhoek next year and Le Ballon Rouge will be our first choice for accommodation.
The proprieter, David, also organised a lovely wine tasting tour for us - it was perfect. There was a good variety of vineyards; just the right amount of information and cheese & biscuits provided just when we were starting to flag a bit!

We stayed two nights in a lovely room with a spacious, beautiful bathroom. The staff were very nice. There is plenty of parking onsite, a large courtyard, delicious and beautifully presented breakfast., and one block walk to the main street. We loved it!

We stayed in Le Ballon Rouge for two nights in May. The guesthouse was truly superb, the exterior was in fitting with the normal Franschhoek buildings, the interior was wonderfully decorated with a modern contempory feel, as you would find with a high end 5 star hotel. All modern amenities were facilitated. It’s definitely the first place I’ve stayed where there was a high quality coffee machine with excellent coffee included in the price.

The owners Jenny and David really looked after us and made us feel truly welcome from the moment we walked into the place. David took us on a wine tour of four different vineyards, which was excellent. He was highly knowledgeable about the regions wines and brought us to the best vineyards the region had to offer. I highly recommend doing this if you visit and the tour is very reasonably priced.

Jenny also recommended both places to eat and places to visit, which really made the visit that bit more special. Staying at the Le Ballon Rouge was definitely the highlight of our visit to South Africa and I cannot recommend this place enough. You won’t be disappointed with a stay here.

Thanks again Jenny and David – See you next time!

I agree with the other contributors, I was a single in a double room in the courtyard at the side of the main building, this was a good sized room with huge bathroom, with bath and wet room style shower.
Very central to the town, although there was a great deal of building work in progress on the main street, this was a quiet small hotel. I agree a fridge would have been useful but this did not spoil my stay here.
The staff were very courteous and the breakfasts were excellent.
I was with a group of 8 and we had our 'sundowners' on the patio near the small pool, or on the rooftop attached to the suite which some of our group were staying in.
Should you choose to stay here it will be enjoyable as is Franschhoek, especially if you are interested in wines of the Cape. Enjoy your stay.

Although we only stayed for one night at Le Ballon Rouge, we enjoyed a beutifully appointed room, good service and a great location as it's based just off the main street in Franschhoek. All rooms have their own external entrance and open onto a veranda running along the outside of the property, each has it's own table and chairs so that you can enjoy the dramatic mountain views or just watch the world go by.
