I feel very priviledged to have stayed at this wonderful place. The rooms are a lovely size, with lots of space. Very clean and the beds are very comfy. The staff at the manor are very friendly and very helpful. A truly wonderful place

We decided to celebrate our anniversary by going away for the weekend. My husband chose Rickety Bridge and I new nothing about it. When we arrived the staff was welcoming and friendly. The view is outstanding. Expecting a fair sized room, I was shocked to see the spacious room and bathroom that we received. Beautiful furnishings, comfortable bed and a tranquil ambiance. The breakfast served was delicious, like a real farm house breakfast and the service was outstanding. It felt like we were the only ones staying there even though all three rooms were occupied. It was one of the best weekends away that we have had. Highly recommended.

Rickety Bridge. This was a lttle taste of heaven. We arrived in the rain, with a dull, dreary outlook. This was despite the typical Cape Dutch homestead. We stayed in the adjoining Basse Provencal and went next door to the winery after a superb breakfast. What were we in for? Wow! I could take a whole Gigabyte to describe the most wonderful experience. They surpassed our expectations on every level. We were greeted at the door by Susan, who offered us the couches next to the fire. This was a mistake! It was my Birthday and somehow this seemed to be a home from home atmosphere. Susan attentatively and diligently satisfied our every need. After 3 hours and much chatting, laughing and of course, superb wines, we placed our order for delivery to our humble abode in Lonehill so that we may relive the exceptional experience. Well done Rickety Bridge. You are certainly a cut above in atmosphere, service and hospitaliy. We will be back. Many thanks for the most memorable Birthday. Rob and Jenny Duke. We ended up staying here by accident when their cheaper manor house was booked out and thanked our lucky stars that we stumbled across such a wonderful place. There were only 3 rooms in the country house each with their own big bathroom, very comfortable bed with beautiful linen and a lovely view out over the vineyards. It was quiet, romantic and the staff were absolutedly wonderful - we were very sad to leave. It is a great spot to explore the local wineries and great restaurants or just to relax and stay put. Rickety Bridge does have a restaurant and we ate there one day but I would recommend that if you do then you take one of their famous gourment picnic baskets out into the vines rather than order from the menu.

It is inherent in travellers' reviews I guess, that your perception of the destination is often coloured by your expectations. I had booked this place last minute (2 days before arriving for a 2 night stay) and managed to book a room in a 3 bedroom guesthouse. It is true to say that I was dreading the quality of the place as rates were very reasonable. The guesthouse is located a little down the road from the main stretch (there is really only one main road in Franschoek). First impressions as you drive in - a dirt road, quite far back from the main road - i like the rustic cape dutch style and the fact it is on a vineyard with its own vineyard label, very tempting to take home to relive the memories. The Rickety Bridge cellar door shop was nice, selling very drinkable wines served by very affable people - but apparently most of the grapes are bought in as the grape produced on their own patch is insufficient. They also sell other local produce (chutneys, dips and the like - so was good for nibbles with wine tasting). I dont think this is the type of place coach loads come to so you really get the sense that you are rather quite special. The guesthouse itself is a cape dutch house next door to the cellar door shop and really is a whole house to yourself. A large living room which you can feel quite at home in - three bedrooms adjoining a tv room landing upstairs. Whilst the feel may be rustic, the bedroom was very well appointed with luxurious bedding, nice large toilets, i cant really fault it from a 5 star hotel room. We didnt spend a lot of time there, just for sleeping and for breakfast and for a quick nap after a long afternoon tasting all the wines they had to offer next door, but it was the highlight of the trip to SA. Cld it be because i was expecting so much less? i think not. this place deserves 5 stars and i suspect shld be higher on the list of recommended guesthouses were it not for the small number of reviews on account of it having only 3 bedrooms. [if however you like spas, room service and people to fuss around you,go elsewhere as we didnt see much staff presence the whole time we were in the guesthouse although the cellar door shop was just a few steps away. didnt get to check out the restaurant, so cant say abt the food]

Rickety Bridge is a working vineyard which produces some excellent wines. We know .... we tried them! Accommodation in the Burgundy Room in which we stayed was excellent. Very spacious with an adjoining sitting room. Breakfast is made freshly by one of the house staff and served by the pool. Although the restaurant only serves lunch we were provided with a range of othery winery restaurants that serve dinner, some with complimentary transport and these were booked for us. We would certainly recomment Freedom Hill for dinner. The grounds and views of the mountains at Rickety Bridge are fantastic and we enjoyed a personal tour of the winery to see how their delicious wines are made. All the staff are so helpful and welcoming. Rickety Bridge really is 'The Place to Stay'.

We spent 2 weeks at Rickety Bridge staying in one of the 3 rooms at The Manor House. They also own Basse Provence with 9 more rooms in an adjacent property. The Manor House is an old dutch style residence which has been lovingly maintained and restored, full of beautiful period furniture and fittings (in fact the website doesn't do it justice. The staff managed by Nicky Hahn are pleasant and very friendly going out of their way to meet guests needs. Leoni and Heidi who mainly looked after us during our stay were wonderful. Most gests only stay 1 or 2 nights as they are passing through on the wine route. I would advoocate staying longer and in fact on several nights we were the only guests and felt like lord and lady of the manor....like having your own private house. In fact if there were a group of you you could have the whole house for a party, celebration, even a business meeting. There is an amazing guest lounge equipped with subtle touches like decanters of fine red wine and sherry.

Before we went we talked to friends who had stayed here and also read the one other review on trip adviser. I'm not sure which hotel the reviewer stayed at but Fawlty Towers it is not! However if you like Modern Hilton/Sheraton/Raddison et al plastic faceless hotels then Rickety Bridge is not for you. It is a working vineyard (fantastic wines) and an old building, therefore things go wrong (Our Airconditioner failed one day and there was a problem with the water one evening - there is a water shortage in South Africa at present anyway, but both were sorted out within a day and with good humour). Having said that, Rickety Bridge has wireless (I had to keep in contact whilst there) and it's own private pool and a 1st floor lounge with a huge LCD TV and cable (which is also in all the rooms). The only thing which was perhaps missing was a telephone in the room.
It is also a favourite with the locals for weddings as they have function rooms attached to the Winery and the location surrounded by the vineyards and Franschoek mountains is stunning. Whilst we were there it also had it's own nesting family of Eagle Owl Chicks in the vineyards who came out on the front lawn at dusk to greet us!
The location is excellent being just 5 minutes by car from the centre of Franschoek with its many fine vineyards and restauarants. Paarl, Stellenbosch are in easy 20 min drive and Cape Town is only 50 mins, Hermanus and the coast 90 mins.

Nicky is really helpful booking restaurants and music for us. Our favourites were Friday Night Jazz Supper at La Brasserie (as good as you will find in any top jazz club in europe), French Connection (did not like it's bigger brother Haut Cabriere) and Topsi's (owned and run by Topsi who at 79 is an amazing character) authentic SA food. I have reviewed them separately along with others we visited such as Dieu Donne, Kalfi, Reubens and The Pancake House and Local Pizza place.

All in all I cannot recommend this hidden gem too highly.
