Franschhoek seems to be the San Sebastián of South Africa and surely The Tasting Room and its award winning chef must take much if the credit for that. The surprise menu (we have eaten too well in this country so only went for 5 and not 8 courses), was incredible. From the cashew nut and olive marshmallow and squid ink stone as part of the amuse vouches, through to the hartebeest loin, the gruyere of the cheese course and then the biggest surprise of all the dessert. Won't spoil it for you by describing what happens but it was all full of imagination and the most incredible array of flavours.
Probably the best meal we've had outside San Sebastián and in many ways as enjoyable as the great Mugaritz. But not quite Arzak!
