“TOUCH 'A CLASS”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

Cape classique might be the name of something bubbly down there in South Africa but Grand Provence is another expression of classic. A tasting is fine but a meal indoors or one under the ancient oaks is even better. Art certainly adds and the over all experience is classic cape.

“A perfect Sunday lunch”
Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

Having dropped in for a glass of wine earlier in the week in order to book, we returned for Sunday lunch and were not disappointed. The 320 rand menu is very good value and includes a few freebies between courses. Live music was on hand, provided by a local-ish band that sounded like a cross between a West Indian steel band and Peruvian pipes, but it worked well. Their version of Danny Boy was great.

The estate wines are great and again, pretty good value. Service was efficient and friendly with it.

On the negative side, the filet beef had too many sauces and competing flavours - four is two too many. Presentation ( spectacular ) should not take precedence over flavour.

The beautiful surroundings help create a classy atmosphere, so you feel quite comfortable dressing up. On the other hand, those who feel it necessary to wear a baseball cap whilst eating are also well catered for.

The previous two reviewers were very unlucky in my opinion : this was our 5th visit.

“Lunch in the Garden of Art”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

The simple gardens of Grande Provence featuring the thoughtful art of South African artists amongst lavender and oaks makes a delightful setting for lunch in the company of the Franschoek mountains. The food matched the artistic expression of simple, fresh beauty and the service was outstanding.

“Service shocker!”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

Driving into this beautiful estate we had high expectations... the gorgeous architecture and lush winery had us at the first glance. It is one of the only wineries open for dinner, so we decided to try it. Well, we did not last until dinner. The waitress made us feel as though we ought to be apologetic for disturbing her, and even though the kitchen opened at 7pm, we asked for a cheese platter in the meantime (at 6:50pm) and she refused. Will not be returning.

“Absolutely horrific”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

We ended up here because the winery we wanted to visit was closed on Sunday. We had a walk through the garden, nobody greeted us. When we sat down for some wine and food, nobody came to wait on us. Thinking it might be self service we went searching for somebody. We found the staff inside talking with eachother and they were annoyed to be disturbed by us. They said the would send someone to get our order, but nobody came. So we left. Later on when we told our experience to our hosts they said they had had a lot of bad comments of their guests and they had sent an email to the management. Apparently the management doesn't take things very seriously. Shame!

Dear JMS121212

We were disappointed to read your review about your recent visit to Grande Provence Heritage Estate. Of course we take your comments in the most serious light and these have been followed up internally and addressed with the staff concerned.

If you look at our overall Trip Advisor ratings and reviews, you will see that in the vast majority of cases the feedback is extremely positive.

Our goal is to maintain and improve the very high standards we set ourselves, so when we let down a guest it is a matter of great concern to us. We do everything possible to find out what went wrong and to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

However, I must take issue with your suggestion that management does not take these matters seriously. This is simply not correct. Also, it was in fact our General Manager who took the initiative after your comments were posted, to contact your hosts in Franschhoek and it was only then that we received feedback, not prior to your visit as you imply.

Once again, we do apologise for the disappointing experience you had, and we hope you will come back on your next visit to Franschhoek so that you can experience the superb cuisine and other beautiful facilities for which Grande Provence Estate is renowned.

With kind regards,
