“Fabulous meal in Franshoek”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

This is a very popular place in Franshoek so the pace is busy. But having said that, the food was spectacular. I had the mussels which was the best!!! I asked for bread 2 times so as not to miss any of the broth.

“Our favourite restaurant in Franchhoek”
Reviewed April 12, 2013

This was our 5th year of staying in Franchhoek at the end of a 6 weeks tour of SA. We look forward to arriving in Franchhoek for many reasons and one is to visit The French Connection!
Its one of the best restaurants on our trips. We have tried most restaurants in Franchhoek over the years but now we eat every night at The French Connection. This year we had dinner here for 6 nights and they were truly excellent. The food was cooked to perfection and the staff are friendly, attentive and professional. Sitting on the terrace as the sun is going down and eating good food - what more could you want!!
We look forward to our visit next year.

“frozen food”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

we had dinner at french connection on friday 05.04.2013,it was terrible!!!

1.we did not have a booking but there were about 5 tables open on the street curb.We asked the Waiter if he can make the smallest effort to please book us on of these tables as because the restaurant looked good and we got engaged two days ago,no effort was done and he just said first come first serve, stand outside from around 18:30 and see if you can get a table.
2.the service started out good but we were totally forgot about as the evening went on.We waited about 12minutes for our plates to be cleared.
3.THE FOOD: My fiance had the Rib-eye special: Matured Rib-eye served with bone marrow, vegetables,French fries in a red wine reduction. I had the 500gr Ribs served with new potatoes

A. the french fries was McCains oven bake chips
B.the vegetables was McCains frozen stir-fry vegetables
C. WE RECEIVED A PIECE OF WELLD ONE RUMPSTEAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! INSTEAD OF RIB EYE
D.THE RED WINE REDUCTION TASTED LIKE NOTHING,THE BONE MARROW WAS TASTELESS AND THE RUMP STEAK WAS NOT SEASONED AT ALL,TRULY A TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE BLAND,TASTELESS DISH,WORST OF MY LIFE , FOR R130.00
E.THE PRESENTATION OF THE RIBS WAS BORING,PIECES NOT EVEN CUT. THE BASTING WAS AVERAGE BUT THE PIECE OF RIB THAT DIED IN MY PLATE WAS CHEWY AND NOT SOFT AT ALL,ALSO FELT LIKE IT WAS RATHER WARMED UP IN A MICROWAVE THAN FLAME GRILLED

I called the manager over and asked him where they make their chips,he said they have a problem with the crispiness of real potatoes the past week and that is why they use mccain frozen chips. Why can the restaurants next door serve fresh chips? where do they get their potatoes from?HE ALSO GOT VERY COCKY AND I JUST SAID I WILL NEVER COME BACK AND THAT I AM GOING TO PAY THIS BILL WITH A VERY HEAVY HEART. THE BILL AS ALMOST R500,WHAT A WASTE OF MY MONEY

he just walked away as if not bothered at all,his attitude made the evening even worse

I will not recommend this restaurant to anybody, ever!!!!!!!!!!!

Jason R, Owner at The French Connection, responded to this review, April 14, 2013
Dear Mauritzf

It was disappointing to read your recent review on Trip Advisor. We do not generally respond in a public forum and like to make sure our customers leave happy with the meals we serve them.

We were fully booked inside and out on the evening in question, and the waiter you approached in the late afternoon, did let you know. During the cooler months we are unable and unwilling to reserve the pavement tables because of the unpredictable weather in Franschhoek. If the wind comes up, as it frequently does at this time of year, we are unable to seat patrons seated there or inside if we are then fully booked. For this reason we offer these tables on a first come first serve basis only. Perhaps this could have been explained to you better on the night in question.

My apologies that your plates were not cleared timeously on the evening. I have discussed this with all the staff who were on duty that evening.

I would however like to set the record straight regarding your comments on the food:

The vegetables you ate on the night were fresh and prepared in our kitchen. I have never served a frozen vegetable (chips excluded) in my 27 year restaurant career. While on the subject of frozen food, our ribs, steak, fish, lamb, pork and mussels all come in fresh and are never frozen. Our stocks for all our sauces are also made fresh on the premises.
Our beef is purchased from Chalmar Beef, a top notch, high end and well respected beef supplier. Our ribs are also cut from the more expensive belly rib and are always raved about. We don't cut our ribs into pieces (though we would have done so with pleasure if you had requested it) and generally serve the whole rack as I believe most restaurants do. We also don't microwave them, we do initially warm them in the oven and then char-grill them and baste before serving them. I apologise if you feel that the food was not up to standard. I do wish that you had sent your dish back to the kitchen, so we could have had an opportunity to ensure that you left happy and having enjoyed your meal.

We do use frozen chips at the moment, as they are giving a much better result than the fresh ones we used recently. Potatoes have a high water content at present, so the chips cannot get crisp and the usual Van der Plank potatoes we use are currently unavailable. We don't have access to the large variety of different potatoes you get in Europe or the States. Jason, our general manager was trying to explain this to you on your departure. All my staff will bend over backwards to make sure our patrons leave satisfied and happy, even if your food has to be replaced, and our good Trip Advisor record attests to this. Please mail me directly if you want to discuss this further.

Regards

Matthew Gordon

“A fine way to have lunch”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Great food at a great price in a lovely Bistro setting. Sitting on the terrace in the sunshine was a perfect way to have lunch. The fishcakes were divine as was the Sauvignon Blanc
