What a meal. No trip to Franschhoek would be complete without a visit here. a great Chef who came out and chatted to us, spoke about his food and even signed his recipe book we purchased while there. Great surrounds to enjoy quality wine and brilliant food.

“Great little gourmet deli”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2011

We stopped here for some hot chocolate on a rainy day and ended up getting a little gastronomic tour. Unprompted, the lovely, enthusiastic and super knowledgeable workers showed us their larder filled with hundreds of maturing hams and artisanal sausages, offering tastings of anything we wanted. They also let us try other interesting things like rooibos smoked butter and a range of wonderful sparkling wines - all extremely reasonably priced starting with 69 rand per bottle. We had a freshly baked, still warm focaccia which was a little overfilled with feta and maybe too salty, but still pleasant. The deli also sells jams, whiskey marmalade, oil and other provencal-style goodies.

“Best way to taste wine in Franschoek”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2011

We toured several wine estates in Franschoek during our honeymoon. But by far our favorite was the Moreson Estate, and their "Bread and Wine" cafe. For a very reasonable fee, we were treated to different charcuterie pairings with several different wines, including the South African-created pinotage. Lots of fun, and more interesting for us than tasting wine alone, without food. Also a great gourmet shop.

“Lovely as always”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2011

Living in Franschhoek have eaten here on a number of occasions without adding a review,. However, yesterday had one of the tastiest salads EVER. Cous cous & goats cheese and lots of other tasty things. The sun was shining, the staff are professional and friendly, what more can anybody want?

“Not worthy of the praise it receives...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2011

I've just read a new review posted by another person regarding the restaurant, and it seem that we actually ate at the restauranton the same day, and had completely different experiences, regarding food and restaurant.

I'll tackle the restaurant first. We booked for lunch and received our table promptly. Our waiter appeared without introducing herself, gave us our menus and left without any knowledge of water or wine that we might require. The restaurant was very busy thought. We decided to both have the same dishes, as we wanted light meals. So for starters we both had the shucked oyster and for mains we had the bigger portion of the pea, truffle and cheese risotto (as we're both a fan of risotto) Service during our whole lunch was extremely unfriendly, way too fast and it constantly felt to us that our they wanted to us to finish quickly. To give you an idea, we walked in and an hour later we walked out, having finished 2 courses, and a bottle of wine. And we actually wanted to spend a long afternoon at the restaurant. The time between us ordering, and the food arriving was way too quickly. We wanted to let the waiter know that we were not in a hurry, but our food promptly arrived prior to us informing the waiter. We had to pour our own wine throughout the whole lunch, and the waiter was only seen to remove plates and cutlery. Not good at all.

The food was the most shocking experience of the day. The single Namibian oyster for starters was fresh, but lacked any imagination or taste completely. There was a champange foam on the oyster, but this had not taste at all. It was a fresh big oyster and that's it. Not what was discribed on the menu. The risotto was the most shocking risotto that we've ever had in our life. The rice was completely undercooked, and I mean, completely, as we had to literally chew through the rice. The whole dish was so extremely over-salted that we couldn't finish it at all. It literally felt like you were eating salt with some cheese. Some people might differ with me, but to provide perspective, the following day we went and had lunch at Terroir (one of the top 10 restaurants in SA) and I had risotto there as well, and this was a complete magnificent experience. Not at all like the one we received at Bread & Wine.

Thus, we paid and left and felt completely disgusted by the restaurant, regarding food and service. We won't be back at all.
