The rose petals in the bath and the little bottle of champagne were a lovely touch for our Anniversary stay. We will definitely stay at the hotel again. Lovely setting and friendly staff. Quiet as well.

We spent 2 days at the Protea Hotel and we were delighted with all aspects. Friendly, helpful staff. Fantastic breakfast. Large comfortable rooms situated around a very pleasant pool area. Franschhoek is a beautiful place, definitely worth a visit.

This was a last minute decision, third hotel we tried driving between Stellenbosch and Franshhoek. It is strange haggling over price in a hotel of this quality, but it seems the done thing in South Africa!

The location is fantastic, i wanted to be able to wander down the main street and choose a nice restaurant based on Menus, rather than be stuck with the only restaurant in walking distance, and the Protea gave that along with nice rooms and a pool catching the sun until late.

I literally just checked into this hotel and instantly regretted it. Our friends received their room for R824 and, when I asked if we could stay too, their answer was that room rates were strictly R1300. I declined. Later when we dropped off our friends I again asked about the rate for the evening. The lady told me that R1300 was the only price. I pointed out that my friends were paying a much lower rate. The lady at the front desk then told me the 'rates change hourly.'

At this point I declined again and walked to my friend's room where I got a call from the front desk saying they could give me my friend's rate after all. Now I'm sitting in a tiny room with a view of the street (the other rooms are pool view and much larger) for over $120 per night!!! I cannot believe it. The good thing is that we are at least close to our good friends. I have been traveling all over South Africa and have stayed at some amazing places...the last place we stayed was a two bedroom/two bathroom beachfront apartment for the same price (Lagoon Beach Apartments was incredible! Great service too.)!!!

Price aside, I cannot believe the service. As a travel journalist, I will never, ever recomment this hotel to anyone personally or in any of my articles.

We stayed at The Franschhoek Inn because of the location. We needed somewhere close to the town center so we could walk in to one of the restaurants for dinner with out the need of a car, and the hotel was perfect for this.
The Hotel is generally clean (although there were a couple of small issues with the room), the room size is excellent, and the staff very helpfull. There is a slight concern with the security as the hotel is accessed directly from the main entrance or the car park. ( The later doesn't seem to have any security measures in place) and leads directly to the rooms, bypassing the hotel reception.
The rooms are a very generous size, and this includes an excellent bathroom with large shower and seperate bath! We did find hairs on two of our pillows, but they were changed very quickly!
All the rooms are centered around a nice courtyard garden which houses a good size pool. With so much to do in the area, we didn't have achance to use it, but it did look invinting! The hotel was quite quiet, but we could hear what our neighbours were up to.
We were celebrating our friends anniversary, so we wanted a nice retaurant to go to in the evening, and chose 'Burgundy's restaurant cafe' as it looked very nice. Sadly the entire experience was quite disturbing!!!
The decor and general ombience of the restaurant was quite nice. It was obvious what they were trying to achieve, but the bugget was not substantial enough to create the up-market look they were after. They went for the 'shabby chic' look, but just ended up with shabby!
The food was served still frozen in the middle when they claim they prepare all their food fresh on the day! They offered to re-cook it or replace it, but didn't offer any explination as to why we were served food that could potentialy make us very ill!
The service was ok, but not exceptional, and the prices are far too expensive for the sub-standard quality of the food.
Lastly we asked for the price of their champagne before entering the restaurant, and was quoted R480 , although this was not listed on the menu depite having a champagne bar with in the restaurant. When we cam to pay the bill they charged us R780. R300 more than they first quoted, and they still tried to charge us for the food we sent back for being frozen!
When we refused to pay for the food we sent back, and the added extra for the champagne they threatened to take it out of the staff wages! The white owners treatment of their black staff was quite dispicable, and obviously very racist!
We were then subject to threatening behaviour by the owners and some guys they called into the restaurant. So much so, we feared for our lives, and ended up having to pay double the origanal bill just to insure a safe exit from the restaurant!
What ever you do when visiting Franschhoek, please do not go to this restaurant!
When we returned to the hotel we had a drink in the bar, the staff were very kind and helpfull!
This is a great hotel that is not too expensive, coviniently located, and has decent size rooms!

The hotel had good-sized rooms with a great view of the mountains from my room. Staff were friendly and room service decent. Overall, a good budget hotel.
