Pros: Comfortable well-appointed rooms, excited/engaged/attentive staff, fabulous food, exceptionally remote and quiet, relaxing.

Cons: Not enough emphasis put on game viewing. We saw more wildlife coming in and leaving than on the game drives. !Xaus should offer early morning game drives.

Management response:Responded March 9, 2011

We would like to acknowledge your comment about game viewing and give context to game drives, and their frequency.

During the course of a typical two-day stay at !Xaus Lodge there are four game drives: The dune drive into the Lodge; a night drive (after dinner); a late-afternoon pan drive that includes a sunset stop, that then becomes a twilight drive and finally the dune drive when leaving the Lodge. In addition, guests who stay four or more days are given a full-day game drive on the Auob River Road.

One of the fundamental features of !Xaus Lodge is that "It is a place to experience, and not just observe." To this end, every day we also have two wilderness walks - one into the dunes in the early morning, and one onto the pan, en-route to visit the Bushmen crafters. The purpose of these walks if to give people a different view of the environment, other than the one they observe from vehicles. This is the opportunity to see the game that is invisible from a vehicle: insects, burrowing animals, reptiles and the like.

In addition, we plan time into the day that allows you to experience the tranquillity of the desert. Our sincere hope is that when you leave !Xaus Lodge you will have a holistic understanding of the environment, the people and the eco-system that is the Kalahari desert.
