Montusi Mountain Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 11, 2010

Making guests comfortable has been so well thought through at Montusi. The magnificent scenery provides a stunning back drop for this professionally run family enterprise. Our family of 4 stayed for 3 nights and experienced the guided walks (with welcome tea and biscuit break), horse-riding and activity centre - which were all very well organised, sympathetic to the environment and enjoyable.

Each afternoon tea and delicious cakes were served in the lounge.

The site (both the grounds and the accommodation) is very efficiently maintained by the resident staff.

The ethos of Montusi is for those seeking a peaceful and quiet environment - and thus not necessarily a destination for families and children.

With this understanding and our own objective of seeking the same concept - we were more than happy to blend into the essence of Montusi.

Even with a fussy 11 year old daughter and a Chicketarian son, Montusi's dining room provided us with excellent breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

The service provided by the owners and their daughters was always with a smile and with genuine concern that guests had a positive experience at Montusi. It was a memorable stay for all of our family.

This is a good quality property, one of a number of several similar lodges in the North Drakensberg region. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, food is good, ambience friendly and scenery beautiful.
It is very convenient for Royal Natal NP and excellent walking country, but somewhat isolated, being well away from any towns. Definitely no nightlife for many miles!

A warm friendly welcome, good value for money, very nice chalets, good walking country (take some time to appreciate it).

The ampetheatre is worth the effort, the drive up to the car park is possible in any car but prepare for a rough ride. The start point of the walk is well over an hours drive from the lodge so make sure you allow plenty of time. There is no need for a guide on the walk...

I can only add to the previous reviews and say that Montusi Mountain Lodge is beautiful- in fact, one of the best places I have ever stayed. Why? The setting is stunning- panoramic views of the Drakensberg mountains that change colours throughout the day; wonderful thatched roof accommodation- very clean, spacious, romantic, gas fire, comfy sofa, corner bath; food- excellent, again some of the best I have had, and extras (ie lunch and wine) very reasonably priced; the dining room makes maximal use of the views during the day, and at night in winter a log fire burns away; staff- excellent, could not do enough to help, family run.
Overall we had a fantastic trip and I certainly plan to go back.
One point of note- we did the Ampitheatre Climb, and although we took a guide with us, we used our own transport (saloon car), as advised by the lodge- the last part of the drive to the start of the climb is (we would say) not feasible for saloon cars due to the rocky road- we had to turn back (and did the Ampitheatre the next day with the Backpackers lodge), and on the day we turned back, 3 cars got stuck on the rocks. We were not warned of the difficult road which was a shame, but we did discuss this with the lodge and they will be warning people in future. The Ampitheatre climb itself was amazing, but not fot the unfit! And a bit hairy at times! But the views made up for it.....simply stunning.
So in summary, a beautiful lodge, fantastic location.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The are really great, spacious and comfortable and the fire was really welcome in the winter evernings!
The walking trails in the area are great - fantastic views all round. A trip to thetop of the Amphitheatre is a longish drive but really worth it. We took a guide as recommended by the staff. If you a a competent walker, you don't really need one, although he was useful navigating to get us to the car park which is a little tricky! Also, if you aren't too good with heights, you'll appreciate the guide on the chain ladders.

The staff are really friendly, and the food is fantastic. Would love to go back and stay longer.
