“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2008

Our family stayed at Darlington Lodge for 2 nights. It was a really great experience, the staff could not of been more helpful and the local scenery was wonderful. A highlight was the evenning drive to see the sun set over the lake which even our 8 year old thought was worth while. I agree with the other review about staying in the area around the lodge as the travel to the other part of Addo is time consuming, however we went with a guide from the lodge and went through some wonderful mountain passes and visited some areas very much 'off the beaten track'.

All in all a great place to visit for the absolute quiet, sunsets, stars and harsh but beautiful scenery. We would certainly go again.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2008

We are a young (ish!) couple (31+ 43), no kids, stayed there 4 nights in early April 2008. We stayed in the honeymoon room I think it was called and it had a 4 poster bed (room 2). The place is full board (including lunch), but excludes drinks.

What we liked:

The room was lovely, as was the outside environment. The bedroom was clean and well appointed, although a shame there was no shower (even just a hand-held one would have been nice). We stayed 3 weeks in SA in various places (about 6 different places in total)

The people were friendly, helpful, and the safari guide very knowledgeable. Hosts and staff are very friendly and will help you in any way they can.

The walks around the lake, the fishing, and the surrounding mountains were very enjoyable/lovely to look at.

What we thought could have been better:

The food - a lot of effort was put into presentation, and an equal effort put into the food itself would have been nice. I would say that it was under average when compared with the other places we stayed at. Red Leicester (or whatever the local equivalent would be), Feta and olives became a staple part of our diet! However, distance from supplies may have had something to do with it.

In-room toiletries - a "one wash product for all purposes" was provided in the room. It would have been nice to have had at least a shampoo separate from the body wash, for example.

Unless you really want to see elephants, don't go to Addo. It is like a glorified "Lions of Longleat" for those who are familiar with that place. Stay around the lodge and spend time with the local guide in the local area (the evening/night safari is especially good). You will have a much more enjoyable experience, I think. However, if you get a chance do go to the Daniel Cheetah rehab place. There were lion cubs there too when we were there. Not only is it a great experience touching the animals, but you would help support a worthy (privately funded) cause.

Overall, we would definitely return to this lodge, and would recommend it to our friends, with the one proviso about not expecting too much from the food.

It is a great get-away, and infinitely better value than the very expensive private game lodges...after all, and as one of the safari guides aptly mentioned to me, there are only so many things one can do on a bed!
