We have stayed at the Commander for more than 20 years. It was always like coming back to family. The owners knew us, and everyone else. I knew that some things would change when the ownershIp changed, which was a shock to us, by the way. I expected that there would be a transitional period. The initial contact was good, and we decided that we would give the new owners a try. However, it is clear that is has transitioned from being a well-loved family enterprise to a much less personal place. The manager is not particularly unpleasant, but not really pleasant, either. He seems unhappy in the work, since we never saw a smile and his presence on the grounds was minimal. Bill, a tie to the original owners, did his best to keep the atmosphere going, but it is clear that it is just not the same. Our room was not cleaned one day, and the rest of the week the cleaning was done very late in the day because of minimal staffing, We found out that the new owner owns multiple motels, and it seems is more interested in the profits than in fostering an atmosphere that people want to return to every year. It is heartbreaking because we love the location and the familiarity, but we did some motel “shopping” while we were there and will probably stay elsewhere next year.
