“Disgusting and smelly”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

I recently came back from a three day stay here. All I can say is that the room that I stayed in within the Dolphin Building smelled awful! When the air conditioner was turned on an awful musty smell came spewing out, so it was either deal with smell and cough all night or turn it off and deal with the heat. There was what looked like blood on the sheets. I had to keep my shoes on at all times because the rugs turned your feet black. This place definitely needs to be renovated and updated to get rid of the stench in these rooms.

The reviews that were posted about the odors are true. The ice machine was down in the garage. There were drains that went into the basement that kept the floor wet with puddles. It really is sad because the location is really nice.

We stayed here in mid-August 2013 for 2 nigths and were very unhappy. Compared to 3 years ago when we stayed here, everything was already bad but nothing was updated, got worse.

1) Smelly rooms, musty mildew odor in the rooms (motel room, oceanview with 2 Double Beds Room# 616)
2) No Iron in the rooms
3) No hair-dryer in the rooms
4) No towels by the pool (you have to bring your own towels)
5) Very very dirty carpet and sinks in the bathroom
6) Very low toilet with toilet paper dispenser on the floor wall (hard to reach place)
7) For our 2nd night stay, they didn't put new towels at all, we had to call to ask for some, and they bought us 3 new towels only for 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids).
8) Garage very tiny for big cars and if you arrive at the hotel late night after a boardwalk adventure, you will never find a place to park.
9) 2 Elevators working very slow
10) The pool water was soooo coldddd.... No heater in the pool.

My family and I recently completed a weekend stay at the Bal Harbour, and we couldn't be happier! We go down to Wildwood every year, and a friend who lives down there suggested we try it out. The room (and everything else) was clean and comfortable, and the hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The kids loved the pool, which seemed to be very well maintained compared to some that we have seen in the past. The only thing I would note is that they only allow 1 car per room rented, so keep that in mind if you are traveling with more than one car! We have stayed at a lot of places in Wildwood, and this was definitely one of the best!

The reviews that we read vary but we just spent 4 days at Bal Harbour and were very happy with our accommodations .. we had 2 terraces with great views of the ocean and we were on the street side in a 2 bedroom 2 bath with a kitchenette and living room .. for the price we paid it offered us the room and comfort for he 4 of us to be comfortable and the location is perfect. the rooms are not updated but they are clean and spacious and the bathrooms were large...the staff were nice ...the rooms did have a smell but nothing more than expected from being on the ocean, the only complaint is parking.. for those looking for a good place to stay with their family this is a good choice ...it may not be a palace but it is far from many of the dumpy places that we saw along the strip.. we would definitely consider staying again

I recently came back from a stay at the Bal Harbour Ocean Resort in Wildwood Crest New Jersey. It was myself, my sister and our 79 year-old mother. We had read the reviews on Tripadvisor, the good and the bad, and decided to try it since we had family staying there at the same time. We drove down from CT and the outside looks very nice. The parking spaces are definitely tiny but we were able to make do. The lobby was very pleasant looking. The pool area was very nice, although they had one large pool and three smaller ones that are only 1-2 feet deep for the children. The gift shop was very nice and reasonable. Initially, everything was great. The only thing that we did not like about the check-in process is that they want cash because they do not take most credit cards and you have to pay up front before seeing the room. We stayed in Room 221, which was an oceanfront two bedroom, kitchenette suite. The rooms are a little outdated but appeared very clean. The only problem with this room was the fact that if you wore white socks or you walked around barefoot, your feet became very dirty. We had a private balcony, which was very nice to sit outside and just look at the ocean. We came in on a Tuesday afternoon and spent the day at the beach on Wednesday. We saw that our last full day, Thursday, was going to be raining all day and that Friday was going to be very nice so we decided to stay another day. We had to pay $309.00 to stay another night but our room was not available and we had to change rooms. The staff was very helpful in this regard. We left for the day and the employees moved our luggage for us to the new room. We came back around 8pm and this is when it went bad. We went to our new room, #409, and the mildew and musty smell was horrendous. We went down to the front desk and asked to be moved. We were told that our old room had already been given out, so they gave us room #209. They again helped to move our luggage and food that we had in the fridge. We went into the room and it had a slight musty smell. It got much worse when we turned on the air conditioner. We had to sleep without the air conditioner. My mother started to cough and then proceeded to have an asthma attack. We decided that we would not stay another day unless a cleaner smelling room was available. We were told that there were not any rooms available and we would have to stay in the one that was given to us. We then asked for a refund and was refused one unless they could book the room to someone else. We did not take that as an answer and we told them that this was a health issue and that this was for the extra day that we wanted to stay for and not for the original booking. They did agree to give us the refund and they said that they will mail a check to us. I made sure that I got that in writing, which they did give to us.
I am writing this review because after reading the responses that the bad reviews got from the management, I wanted to make sure that the public knows that these people are all telling the truth. To read the management’s responses is disgusting. They don’t want to admit that some of these rooms do have very bad odors and air quality. Management keeps trying to say that the odors happen because the hotel is on a beach. I beg to differ with them. I have stayed at hotels on the beach before and they do not have such smelly, musty rooms as this place does. The handles on the closet doors were rusty, that is a sign of a moisture and mildew problem. The icing on the cake in all of this is that the front desk said that they were going to send maintenance upstairs to check out these two rooms and find out what was going on and fix them. We even told them to check the closets and the bed/couch that was attached to a wooden fixture and when you lifted the lid on the wooden part, it smelled so bad! Well, we called the front desk on our way home to make sure that they send out a confirmation email of when the refund check goes out and we asked them if they had checked the rooms and they said that they had and that they didn’t find anything wrong with them and that they had already booked them to other people. These rooms are not cheap, we were paying $300.00 a night and that is no small piece of change. If we come back to Wildwood Crest again, we will not be staying at the Bal Harbour and we will never recommend this place to anyone. Had we only stayed in our original room, we would have thought that all the bad reviews were bogus as management has stated in many of their responses. But being that we, ourselves, experienced the musty smelling rooms, we have to say that the bad reviews are 100% correct. If management comes on and tries to make us look like we are lying, then shame on them, There are plenty of other hotels, motels, and condos to try in the area. Management makes one wonder that maybe they are holding out for the highest bidder to sell the hotel to someone to renovate for condos, otherwise why would they let this hotel that is in the perfect location get so run down? To prove that we were real guests, I am signing our names.

It's a throw back from the 70's... and by the way the carpets are that old too. It's disgusting!!!
We stayed there for my daughter's competion because thaey gave the Legacy competition dancer and families a discounted rate. There were about 10-15 families that stayed at Bal Harbour from our dance studio. Everyone's feedback was the same. Old, musty, mould extremely smelly-We certainly bit the bullet and left 1 day early-as soon as my daughter finished the competition. We spent about $1300 for the week and it was by far the worst place we have EVER stayed in. We did not even unpack. The beds and couchs were so hard your entire body ached. The whole place including the coffe shop was just AWEFUL. Would not recommend it at all!!! And can't forget the miserably RUDE staff at the front desk.

Admittedly, I was a bit apprehensive about my stay at Bal Harbour based on previous reviews, but I am pleased to say that they are wrong! Everyone was pleasant, friendly and promptly responded to a couple requests. (I.e. extra forks, a blanket). The beds were comfortable as well as the sofa bed which surprised me since I have herniated discs in my neck. Could the kitchenette be more modern? Sure, who cares about that? We are on vacation at the beach and everything is in working order, clean, and efficient.
We have stayed in many Wildwood hotels/motels over the past 20 years and Bal Harbour surpasses them all. How often can you look out each and every window and get panoramic views of the beach and Boardwalk? (North side).
