Keeping wonderful childhood memories of vacations in the Wildwoods, I can come back today and experience much the same with modern improvements that still strive to preserve the nostalgia. While not right for everyone, it is the ultimate boardwalk experience. On the first weekend in June we took a last minute day trip when the weather forecast indicated continued warm temperatures for Saturday. The two and a half hour ride each way, while more appropriate for a stay of at least a few days, was worth it. However, real summer traffic would make such a day trip almost impossible. Our day was consumed by Mariner’s Landing Pier, including its Raging Waters water park. The water park was clean, extensive, and staff was helpful and friendly. Lifeguards would rush to the aid of children who fell off of tubes at the end of slides even if the children could easily stand up with their heads well above the waterline. Water in pools was kept at surprisingly comfortable temperatures for early June. Likewise, our experience at the pier rides was positive as well. A couple of rides were closed for what seemed to be routine maintenance, which is common for early in the season, but nearly all were open and running consistently. As usual, height requirements for some rides seemed a bit more strict and arbitrary than other NJ shore amusement sites (such as Seaside Heights before the storm), but this is a reasonable safety precaution. The children’s wrist bands seemed to swipe fine at each ride, but my ticket card almost always required a few swipes before it worked. I feel that pricing for the day passes we used was not unreasonable, and I believe I would feel the same about the multi-day passes offered. Check the web site to see if you agree. Including a short stay on the beach, one day was not enough to fully experience all this single pier has to offer, and the boardwalk has a lot more than this single pier. If interested in this type of experience for a family vacation, I would suggest booking a hotel room in the peaceful Wildwood Crest, just south of the boardwalk (beaches are huge but the walk to the ocean is still shorter than farther north in Wildwood). You can then drive to the part of the boardwalk you choose to visit. We paid ten dollars to park for the day. I imagine parking for a day during peak summer hours could reach twenty five dollars or more, but metered parking is also widely available, as well as free street parking if you are willing to walk a bit. If your hotel is in northern Wildwood Crest on the beach, it will be within reasonable walking distance from the boardwalk (but not all of the piers).
