“from very good to okay”
Reviewed May 3, 2010

When Umi first opened, I was pleasantly surprised to find really good Japanese in a strip mall. I love sushi and their rolls are quite good too. I had found them to have the best negamaki in the area, but today I ordered it and was very disappointed. There was less beef and way too much greens in the middle. The sauce seemed like a watered down version. When you bit into it, there really wasn't much flavor. Perhaps they got a new chef, but they need to follow their original recipes or I fear they will fail.

“Great Suburban Sushi”
Reviewed January 5, 2009

Umi is a new sushi and hibachi house in a suburban Wayne strip mall. The restaurant has new, beautiful decor offering several dining options, including granite countered hibachi grills, a sushi bar, and several intimate cherry wood booths. While the food is already up to par, the service is a bit haphazard. Do not be surprised if your table is visited by several waiters and waitresses, occasionally causing conflicting results.

When it comes to the food, this place is pretty darn great. The Edanname is lightly salted, and the beans have a strong fragrant undertone, making them more flavorful than most. The Miso Soup is fine, but nothing special. The House Salad contains a savory ginger miso dressing. The Eel and Avocado Maki is one of the best I have ever had, based on the freshness of the fish and the tangy BBQ sauce. The Fashion Roll (which includes shrimp, salmon, tuna, avocado, cucumber, tempura crumbs, and a topping of salmon roe) is a jumble of cooked and raw fish, making it an interesting mix. The Smoked Salmon Maki is also delicious, as it contains perfectly seasoned salmon that is not overshadowed by a smoked flavor.

I recommend trying Umi for its fresh seafood; however, in terms of dining there, you may want to give them a few more weeks to get their act together.
