Some of this was good, some not so good. We stayed there because the rest of the family was staying at the Courtyard down the street for $169/night, but the Comfort Inn charged only $139. They also provided a free hot breakfast, while the Courtyard charged $11.95. So economically it was worthwhile. It was well-located too, right off of NJ 18 and the Garden State Parkway, and 15 minutes drive to the train station at Little Silver.
The hotel can handle 5 people or families with children because it sleeps 5 and has a kitchenette--small refrigerator, microwave, 2 hotplates, dishwasher and small sink. We had only 1 TV, which is not good for adults w/children who want to watch different programs. The refrigerator was too small for our needs & the freezer compartment was extremely small & did not work well. The hotel has another suite for 5 w/larger refrigerator & microwave & 2 TVs but no hotplate or sink for dishes. The room also had only 1 bathroom. The pool water was cool/cold although it was an indoor pool. The hotel has breakfast with an OK array of eggs, sometimes sausages, boiled eggs, corned beef hash and rolls but no hot cereal or make-your own waffles. The woman in charge of providing breakfast service was snotty, unhelpful and certainly did not belong in that job. She would not bring more food out when asked even if it was before closing time. She often would start putting food away before the 9:30 a.m. cutoff. The bread was stale. When someone complained that they had missed breakfast, the manager told her to make more food for them, and she did. The hotel room keys consistently failed, causing us to repeatedly go to the front desk and get new magnetic keys, a daily event. The Internet service gives us pause.....GREAT PAUSE!!!. It is slow as a snail's tail, and this goes for both the in-room wifi as well as the business center. Yahoo was filtered for some reason, and only a text version was available. Also on Saturday night there were hordes of loud unsupervised teenagers, but thankfully they went to bed early. All of this was a collection of minor annoyances. But the absolute height of ignorance was the toilet incident. The kids had gone to bed, and the toilet handle had broken off. Water was pooling on the floor from a leak at the base. A call to the desk clerk brought the suggestion we should change rooms. No, we responded, the children were asleep and we would need to pack everything. The clerk then said we should wait until morning and take it up with the manager. To this suggestion I hit the ceiling. Five people would not do without a toilet overnight. After twenty minutes of back and forth phone calls, the desk clerk said someone would be coming in ten minutes, which turned out to be twenty. He managed the "repair" so that the toilet would flush manually by holding down the handle. It still leaked at the base, but he did slow it down. For our inconvenience with the toilet the manager knocked off some money from the total bill, so he acknowledged that our stay could have been better, and did ask us to return.
