“Pub atmosphere, great beer variety”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

I love this sort of pub, with the beers (and whiskeys) listed in categories. Not a beer-snob feel, though. The menu is interesting, not just "pub grub," but I found my fish tacos had just ordinary ingredients. I will check it out again though!

“Friendly pub, great choices”
Reviewed May 17, 2014 via mobile

Referred by the owners of the B&B in Stanhope, we drove about 10 minutes to Salt in nearby Byram, NJ. The atmosphere is casual, like a tavern in a ski area, with casual staff "find yourself a table, anywhere" and a great beer selection. The Wednesday special is a flight of four beers, the best of which was a chocolate-y stout that served as desert. We split the house salad, a generous and fresh mixture of greens, apples, and walnuts. I had the mussels which were steamed in wine and served over basmati rice with a healthy serving of sauteed spinach. Great combination, but really deserving a good crusty bread. My husband enjoyed the shortribs and we left full and happy.

“Beer, food and music”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

Salt Gastropub is on highway 206 just as you are leaving Byram. It has a large selection of beer with about 10 on tap; 9 of which are interesting rotating micros. The other is PBR for the low price of only $2. They also have a long list of beer in bottles Their food is well prepared and represents an interesting selection of flavors. We particularly have enjoyed the different things they do with vegetables as side dishes. My wife generally orders the risotto, and I am a bit more adventurous and have tried chicken, ribs, steak, scallops (particularly good) and one of the ways they prepare tofu (also excellent). This is a good restaurant and can cater to a wide variety of tastes and budgets. If you wanted a burger and a beer you could get out for under $15 before the tip. You can also try something more interesting for a bit more money and come away feeling that you got value.
What sets Salt apart for us, and makes it worth the 5 starts, is the music. We have listened to both Briz and Jon Wozniak and enjoyed them both. I usually request Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot when I am listening to a singer / guitar player and have, before Salt, never yet found someone who could play it. Jon did not know it, but Briz ended my long years of searching. Not only did he know the song and played it very well, he had a good story to go with it. The house musicians are only there Friday, Saturday and Sunday and play without a cover charge. If you want to hear them, and they are both worth listening to, request a table near their stage. Therestaurant does get noisy enough to make it hard to hear them well. They also bring in name acts on other nights but we have not gone to any of those so cannot comment.

“Great place!”
Reviewed April 12, 2014 via mobile

Excellent food and service! The meat in the mixed grill on the bar menu was melt in your mouth tender and full of flavor. The kale salad was a large portion and very delicious. The Jameson cheesecake was slap your grandma amazing!!! Can't wait to go back next week.
