Walden on the Pond
Ranked #6 of 7 Hotels in Spring Lake
Reviewed July 23, 2008

This past weekend my boyfriend and I stayed at Walden n the Pond.. We both work an insane amount of hours (he is a doctor and I am a lawyer) and our getaways are so important to us!. We both agreed that Walden on the Pond is truly one of the nicest, relaxing places that we have ever stayed. Everything about it was charming. The decor, the surroundings, the rooms and most especially the owner made us feel like we in a home away from home (something that most places claim to do but don't). Because of our work hours-we arrived late -to be greeted by a note telling us to help ourselves to a snack or a drink in the kitchen! In the morning there was a wonderful display of breakfast food- donuts, mini-pies, cookies, bagels, plus juices, hot beverages and spreads. Our room was beautifully decorated, quiet and extremely comfortable, as was the whole house.

Aside from being nice, the owner was extremely knowledgeable about the community and places to go. She gave us many good suggestions- and we took her up on all of them! We were also provided with beach badges, towels and chairs.

Since we have come back we can't stop talking about it and we are definetely going to go back there soon. In fact we already have talked to friends about doing a summer share (they offer it there) next summer.

It truly was a wonderful place to getaway and relax and we both give it the highest rating possible. If you are going to be in Soring Lake-give it a try- you'll be glad you did!

This B&B is a perfect place for those who enjoy quiet comfort, and pleasant surroundings. Rooms are decorated in period decor, and accented with an "at home" appeal. Owner is extremely friendly, and accessible. Guests can sample a light breakfast in a cozy kitchen,or nibble on homemade muffins while relaxing on the front porch. A definite plus is the on- premises private parking. If heading to Spring Lake, enjoy a stay at this beautifully restored Victorian Inn.

I found the Walden to be a charming B&B with a being at "home" feel. It was immaculate, the front porch is lovely and the staff is warm & friendly. Plus, the location is great! I am planning my next stay here!

It was a great pleasure to stay at the Walden on the Pond Inn in Spring Lake NJ with our Westie in one of the attached cottages. After living in Europe it is always refreshing though difficult to find a decent place to holiday with a pet. The Inn was welcoming and made for a very relaxed stay.

As "empty nesters" we were surrounded by families with young(well behaved) children.. the walk to the beach with chairs was a bit on the longer side and yes there is a 5:30 am train on July4th.

However the positives -starting with Dona our Inn Keeper- on site parking, lovely gardening touches and great coffee- made our stay very enjoyable-even with rainy weather.

My girlfriend and I had driven to Spring Lake for the day. We were there w/ 7 kids b/w us. On a whim we decided to stay overnight. She had stayed b/f and said it was great for the price. We called, the owner remembered her and was so nice. We stayed in the 2 bed 3 bath room. While this is not a luxury b&b it was just right for $200. It has a kitchen and a tv room. Only problem was the air conditioning was not great. Heat wave in NJ and only 2 units that were not really doing the job. As soon as we said something they immediately brought in another unit and all was fine. I believe this is under new ownership from 2007 so many of the problems may be fixed now.

I probably wouldn't stay here if it was for longer than 2/3 days. It's not a long term vacation, but a great weekend getaway.

Do not waste your time booking a reservation at the Walden as the owner
obviously does not waste her time trying to fix it. There were water spots all
over the place, indicating more than one leak. The stairs felt like they were
about ready to give way. The paint in the room was all cracked and peeling. The
bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned in years, and the door was partly
blocked by furniture. We did not stay at this hotel. We spent five minutes in
the room and left. We were lucky in that we showed up early enough to be able
to inspect the room before check-in, and did not have to pay as we did not sign
the agreement.

We have been renovating are 1883 Historical Victorian Since it was purchased.

Are staircase is solid Mahogany and can handel the weight of an Elephant.

We also have a new roof that cost approx $20,000. So I would like to know were these
mysterious spots are.

We paint every season as well.
We clean daily and serveral times a day and have maids live-in so it is impossible that a bath would be dirty or look like it was not clean.

Yes, we do have 2 smaller rooms-and that information is told to guests when the reservatin is made. The price is also less-and some people prefer this- because the spend most of there time at the beach or reading on are porch.

All of are rooms have new carpet and furniture - some are antique's
The Manager and Owner care very much about the Inn. Pictures of this room are available upon request.

Where do I start. The walden states: "Circa 1883" well let me tell you it has not been renovated since. It's falling apart, the furniture is old and in squeaky condition. Minimal staff but friendly. What was suppose to be a 4 day special-we left after 3 days and where charged for the 4th. And it is not a cheaply priced place-we paid almost $700 dollars for 3 days. Unless you are a beach lover do not stay in this small town, and by the way you need to pay to enter the beach. They advertise canoes and bikes-well they no longer have it. And the lovely pond they advertise is contaminated and has so many geese-no human should swim in it. The town is beautiful but there is absolutely nothing to do-not even a museum or enough shops to spend the day. The rooms where so small the entrance door hit the bed and the bathroom door could not be opened completely to let you enter. Unfortunately I learned about travel advisor after the trip but everything I read is true. Breakfast-horrible, towels-tiny, rooms-tiny, no restaurants near or walking distance-must use car. They are upfront about charges because they know once you arrive you want to leave-which was our case. I have stayed at other B&B and had a wonderful experience but this one was truly bad!!!!!
