“Charming Inn”
Reviewed March 19, 2011

My husband and I had booked a room at the Normandy Inn and were very pleased with the accomodations and the personnel/staff. My sister had recommended it to us since she and her husband had stayed here a couple of years ago.

We found this victorian inn to be very warm and welcoming. It is beautifully decorated with classical music being played in the inn. Our room was very clean, the queen size bed was comfortable and the bathroom was quite large and clean. The innkeeper was very nice and made us feel very welcome as she greeted us and showed us to our room and also showed us the atrium where there were plenty of videos, books, menus for restaurants, a television and a fireplace. In the afternoon there was tea, coffee and homemade sweets to eat.

I fell in love with the dining room where breakfast is served. It is not your typical small room where everyone sits at the same table and eats. My husband and I have been to several B&B's and find there are times we want to sit by ourselves instead of at a large table with all of the guests. At the Normandy you are seated at your own private table and get waited on. There is a menu with plenty of items to choose from. No, there was no yogurt with granola and berries. . .but they did have delicious thin chocolate chip pancakes, which were very filling along with omelettes, waffles, cereal, etc. to choose from.

The inn is approximately 1 block from the beach, parking is next to the house, the porch is extremely large if you want to sit outside with a cup of coffee and read a book. We arrived on St. Patricks Day and it happened to be a warm spring day, so we truly enjoyed our stay.

My husband and I will definitely return.

Our stay at The Normandy Inn this August was nothing short of amazing. From the moment you walk in the front door you feel that you are in a different era. This home has been lovingly restored and maintained and exudes a serene ambiance. We were greeted immediately and The Normandy staff, no matter who, waited on us "hand and foot" throughout our stay. A homemade breakfast served at our private table along with the afternoon tea was more than we've experienced at any other inn. The front porch and location to the beach unsurpassed. Our room was cozy and romantic and the antiques truly tasteful. The Normandy Inn has become our new "favorite spot" at The Jersey Shore"!

I recently stayed at the Normandy with my mother and family members. We had enjoyed wonderful vacations there many times under the previous owners but hadn't been back in about 10 years. However this trip was disappointing. While all the required amenities are there, the place lacks warmth. The owners are not on-site but depend on a series of employees who provided uneven service or friendliness. For example, when we checked in the woman never introduced herself, complained about another staff member who had made mistakes in our bill and never offered help with luggage even though my mother is 92. Breakfast was ok but lacked healthy choices. It would be nice to have cereal/fruit/yogurt instead of eggs, pancakes etc. every day. The room was clean but not pristine and seemed to lack quality control. The location is great though-1 block from the beach and they did have chairs and towels available. The antique furnishings are a holdover from the previous owners and are still lovely. They also have a beautiful porch though there was a "resident" cat there at all times. I am highly allergic to cats and when I spoke to the desk person the first day she said she'd put the cat inside but it was back an hour later. I gave up. In the past the Normandy was full most of the time, including weekdays in the summer. We were there Mon-Thurs along with only 3-4 other rooms filled out of about 24. There is nothing special enough about the Normandy to make it a standout in Spring Lake anymore and it's not cheap. I was disappointed but perhaps my wonderful memories of the past were too strong to overcome the current mediocrity.

Despite the great location and wonderful full breakfast, this inn was a big disappointment especially considering the $300/night charge. The beds are old and terribly creaky and the innkeeper basically dismissed my complaints and was unwilling to move my family to the other suite which happened to be available for our second night. At breakfast, my family was ignored for at least ten minutes even though only a few other tables were occupied. Only when the owner arrived, did we suddenly get immediate attention. Their policy of collecting the beach badges at check-out also requires an additional charge, which I've never encountered at any other inn in Spring Lake. Stay at the Chateau for better service, better value and beds.

Positive things first: The Normandy Inn in Spring Lake is in a good location, just a few blocks from the beautiful beach. Rooms are clean and full of antiques. The bed wasn't very comfortable, but that wasn't a big deal for us.
On the negative side however, we have to agree with the previous reviewers unfortunately. The Normandy Inn has a serious problem with their staff. They acted as if we were a disturbance from the moment we entered the door. No help in finding out where we would find parking (the owner from the Inn next door finally helped us), no help in finding out about the beach umbrellas and chairs that were part of the package (O-tone of the receptionist "there are probably none left, but go check yourself"). Finally, be prepared to have a beach batch for less then 24hrs. We got it from 3pm on a Saturday afternoon until 11am the next day. The Normandy Inn has a "policy" that will not allow for any deviation. That coupled with a "communication breakdown" (extremely rude behavior) annoyed us so much that we certainly will never return or recommend this place to anyone.

If you can get over the price of a Spring Lake Getaway, then you will be fine with the Normandy. It delivers on all it promises and has great proximity to the beach. It's nothing too special, but it is clean.
