“Better than we Expected”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2012

My adult son and I stayed at the Hyatt Place Secaucus from November 8-11, 2012. Feel free to message me with any specific questions.

Grounds: The hotel is a 9-storey solid block building. We had a lovely room on the 8th floor with a beautiful view of the city. On the ground floor, you’ll find the lobby with a 24-hour food-on-go cafe/bar and seating area, the business center and the breakfast area (as well as additional meeting rooms).

Staff: Your attitude determines how you’ll be treated. Treat them with respect and they will bend over backwards to give you anything you ask for. Treat them poorly and they’ll be polite but not particularly accommodating. Our requests from the front desk we’re addressed within minutes and completely to our satisfaction. As it was our first visit to New York, April at the front desk went out of her way to provide us with bus schedules, highlighting which bus to catch and where and which gate to go through upon our return. She was excellent with shuttle reservations, shopping suggestions ... truly above and beyond what would normally be expected at a front desk. Kudos also go out to Elliott at the front desk. When a miscommunication happened and the shuttle driver was given an incorrect address to pick us up, he remained professional and stayed on the phone until we could be safely located and retrieved. It was very comforting and reassuring.

Maids/Rooms: We left a $2 US tip for the maid each morning. We didn’t have a problem with her touching anything else we left out in the room. The rooms are really quite large. More like a suite with a sitting area, a dining table, an office space, the bathroom and space for the beds. Beds were very comfortable and pillows excellent. Soundproofing between rooms is reasonable. We didn’t hear anyone else. In-room complimentary items included shampoo, conditioner, massager soap bar. There is a hairdryer that worked reasonably well but we honestly didn’t find much use for it. Also an iron, ironing board and umbrella in the closet. Towels were plentiful. Our room had at least 4 bath sheets, 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 2 face cloths. There was a small guest kitchen in the room. Coffee and tea provided with a small coffee maker as well as a mini bar fridge. There is an in-room safe but it is the key lock kind. Electricity is 110V 2-prong plugs the same size as Canada. TV is digital satellite with regular cable channels and a number of pay-per-view channels as well. Never had a problem finding something acceptable to watch.

Food: Food and drink are available 24 hours/day. The breakfast buffet is open from 6:30am-9:30am and a little later on the weekends. Breakfast included a variety of teas, Starbucks coffee, juices, milk, chocolate milk, toast, bagels, breakfast sandwiches (biscuit with an egg, bacon and cheese), yogurt, cottage cheese, all kinds of fresh fruit, cereals, french toast, pancakes, and cold mixed fruit salad. A wide variety of snacks/food is available through room service or there is the grab-n-go café/bar in the lobby. Prices were very reasonable and the food was good.

Internet: Free WIFI throughout the hotel and the business center downstairs is open 24/7. There are 2 computers and a printer.

To Get to the City: Extemely convenient. Catch the 320 bus just outside the back door of the hotel. $7.95 for an adult return ticket. Machine is available right at the bus stop and it will provide change. This bus drops you at the Port Authority Bus Station, just 1 block from Times Square. Bus service starts at 6:00am and runs every 15 minutes with the last bus back to the hotel departing downtown at 1:15am.

Local Shopping: There is a small mall complex within walking distance of the hotel. Lots of restaurants to choose from, both fast food and sit down varieties. The Secaucus Outlets (for discount designer shopping) is located less than 10 minutes from the hotel. Shuttle will take you there free. And of course, more serious shoppers will head into downtown. Best bargains can be found on Canal Street but of course being the fashion capital of the world, there is plenty to choose from.

Tours: Our time in New York was very short and we wanted to make the most of it. We chose the Hop-On Hop-Off Grayline tour bus. $49 for a 48 hour bus pass. 4 different loops covering different areas of the City. Each bus has a tour guide and if you stayed on the bus, each loop would take about 2-1/2 hours. Tickets are least expensive online but you can also purchase them at the 42nd Street entrance of the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the tour begins right outside. Absolutely worth doing. If you do nothing else while in New York, visit the Top of the Rock Observatory at Rockefeller Center. On a beautiful day, there is nothing in the world like it!!

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor room with a city view away from the elevator

We have really enjoyed our stays at this brand!! From the time we check in the service always seems to be top notch! They are so friendly at each and every property! The rooms are great as well. We will definitely be staying at this brand again. This stay was the only property we could book due to the storm and we are very happy with the results!!

Lovely hotel, with a bright, modern and welcoming lobby. Staff was always pleasant, eager to help and very respectful.

The room was very nice as well, featuring a great stall shower, comfortable sectional couch and a very good bed. Not sure what mattress was there, but it was great. Flat panel TV was huge and clear. Starbucks coffee in the lobby was great, as was the capability to get a nice snack 24-hours a day.

I took advantage of the hotel's free shuttle over to a nearby Walmart to pick up snacks and provisions for the weekend. A quick phone call and they were back to pick me up when I was done. Fantastic!

There was apparently some sort of leak or damage to the rear entrance when we arrived, resulting in a towel being left there all weekend. Not the best firth impression, but once explained, it was understandable. All-in-all, a very nice stay, and very close to the Meadowlands Exposition Center, where we were attending a conference.

Only issue I had was a very poor and weak wireless signal. My room was the very last one at the end of the hall, and the signal seemed to be the worst there. Wireless was free, however, so I suppose I cannot complain that much.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to elevators (center of building) seem to get far better wireless signal

We stayed here for a night prior to going on a cruise. Chose this hotel based on reviews and they included 8 days of parking in the rate.

Hotel was in good repair and clean. Some minor issues in the room such as peeling paint on bathroom ceiling and carpets seemed a bit soiled but overall was fine. Nice big flat screen TVs and in room sink/bar area. Seating area and bed area had a divider which was a nice touch in case someone wanted to sleep while another watched TV. Ice machine outside of our room was quite loud and noticeable in the room but surprisingly I didn't hear it while trying to sleep. I'd likely ask for a room not near the ice/vending/stairs next time just in case.

Staff were polite and very helpful and they have a free shuttle that will take you anywhere local or to train station etc.

Free breakfast was good but a madhouse. Long lines to get french toast or eggs and the staff couldnt keep up with demand. I feel the layout was partly to blame as a staff person had a walk to get to the area the food was in and had to maneuver around people lined up (her frustrations showed). We stood and waited for approx 10 minutes to get egg mcmuffin styled sandwiches. There was an Amway convention staying at the hotel so there were dozens of Amway reps all in the breakfast area at the same time so that probably led to the long waits.

If we cruise out of New York again we would chose this hotel again.

Room Tip: avoid rooms near ice/vending machines/stairways if possible as doors dont block the noise well altho...

The hyatt place in secaucas took us in immediately and made us feel right at home. The general manager Jamie Garling went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of knowing our situation. I recommend this hotel to everyone who is in the area for an over night stay.

we traveled in the summer months. We are extra happy while we are staying in this hotel. When you come in to the entrance door you will smell a nice fresh hotel. Makes you want to live there. The staff is is pleasant check in is a breeze and check out is no different. The room was more than enough for 5 people. With the sleeper corner sofa my kids are so restful. Towels, soap, shampoo and blanket are well stocked up. I needed to sew something and forgot my sewing kit. They have it handy. Breakfast was super delicious. I recommend this hotel 100%. If we go back to NY we are staying here again.

We stayed 8 nights. The hotel is nice, clean, spacious rooms, but the closet to put the clothes is very small. Friendly staff , but nobody volonteered information. The bus to Manhattan is across the street, 15-20 min at 9-10 am, but nobody mentioned that it can take 1.5 hours and even more at 5-6 pm. Breakfast is ok but absolutely the same every morning, cutlery is from disposable plastic. It can be very crowdy at 8-9 am. It is not allowed to open windows in the hotels in NJ, air conditioning is noisy in the room. Bottom line - nice 2 and a half stars hotel not far from NY.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have better view.
