Everybody at our table last evening are big travelers and have eaten all over the world. Picky would not even begin to describe their palates. Our dinner was nothing less than sublime. SRI is a New Jersey treasure. Kudos to the chefs and staff. They are truly world class.

We just went back for our second visit to the 'new" Saddle River Inn. When I went in May the food was excellent, however the service was terrible, in particular the wine glasses were dirty and spotted and the waiter knew nothing about handling wine.

There was a 100% improvement in the service. Our wait person, Doug, started in September and you could tell from the start that he had the experience necessary to work in this level of restaurant. Our wine glasses were spotless, he kept a close eye on our consumption to ensure that he refilled as soon as the glass was almost empty. Our red selection, a Chimney Rock Elevage from the early 2000's had a lot of sediment and he knew to decant it in a manner that didn't overly oxidize it so that all the flavors were lost.

The food was also very good, my husband really enjoyed the tuna tartar with thinly sliced radishes and jalapenos instead of the usual wasabi. The scallops were good, although I prefer them without the butternut squash. I did miss the potato gratin from the old days, maybe I can get the recipe now that they aren't serving it.

So, with the improvement in service, we will be returning.

Very cozy, romantic and quiet, and the food is outstanding. You can sit downstairs, or upstairs which overlooks everything and either way it has nice views bc they are located off the beaten path. Bear in mind this is a BYO so if you go, take the best bottle you can because the food is worthy. Also the manager and the servers here are great, warm and friendly. Its a very relaxing place to go and just enjoy a great meal. I would say dress on the upscale side of casual - they cater to a more sophisticated clientele, which is welcome.

We made reservations a couple of weeks in advance for our celebration party of 6 people. We had been to this restaurant several years ago and had a great experience. After excellent service, a fun time with just ok food at prices we expected and did not mind paying, we were handed our bill before dessert was finished. Our coffees/not hot teas were not finished and there were no re-fills offered. As we sat finishing up and collecting our money, the owner/manager Dave approached our table to ask us to get up and leave! We just spent $600 (byob, so no bar bill) in his restaurant on mediocre food and his audacity really left us with a bad taste in our mouths .....the mediocrity would have been overlooked/forgotten because we had so much fun in a lovely atmosphere with a great waitstaff. Had he waited 5 more minutes we'd have been gone.
He told us he had this table booked and our "time was up"! What?!
Clearly Dave needs to go back to his Restaurant Management classes and learn a few things: how to book reservations for parties greater than 2, courtesy and politeness, and an understanding of how to communicate with his patrons, because he won't have too many left if he pulls that stunt on every party that goes over his "time limit"!

The setting of the Inn is quaint. It is a shame there is not a lounge area to enjoy your "BYOB" while waiting for other members of your party to arrive or even after your meal. The bread with pumpkin butter was very good. I would have enjoyed another piece but were each served 1 slice. Did appreciate the waiter mentioning the price of the specials. My meal was a disappointment. The risotto was under-cooked and certainly not creamy. I needed to search to find a morsel of lobster which shouldn't have been too difficult because the portions were small. My apple crisp, served in a minute sized ramekin, was mediocre. I make a better apple crisp! To add insult to injury (pricey, non-impressive food) the owner was quite rude in asking us to leave. No, I will not be going back here. The owner needs lessons in common courtesy.
