Architecture and history is great, but the entire place needs restoration. Things that break seemed to be rigged instead of actually fixed and there isn't enough care put into housekeeping to actually consider it really "clean". We stayed there twice and cannot say we had a lovely experience.

For the price paid, definitely not worth it!! Take a day trip and see the grounds because they are worth the visit, but other than that I wouldn't stay here again (unfortunately).

I had to change my date because the castle was overbooked but no biggie. The castle was lovely and my girlfriend LOVED it! We took a walk around the gardens and explored the castle. We stayed in the Gatsby room and it was huge with a king size bed! There was a portable AC already on when we arrived so it was nice and cool. We got up in time for the latter end of the free continental breakfast buffet and we sat outside on the terrace. All in all a great place to visit.

Setting up my reservation was easy and handled very well and professionally. However, upon arrival, I was very let down and uncomfortable with the very lax policies and only male employee. To start, he had mentioned that he would be at the desk if we needed him an any time his services were needed ie: towels, room service, an extra banker or dinner recommendations, he was NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. There was also a phone number left that he could be reached at, which he never answered. Eventually we just made out own way but took note that building was not locked up over night.

In the morning, the food was ok but because we were one of only a few guests there that night, the same MIA employee from the night before made us feel very awkward and uncomfortable as he explained to us, "that he had made us something extra special for breakfast because we were one of the few there " He was sweating and smelt badly of stale alcohol and only made us feel as tho he was fishing for a gratuity

All in all the location is beautiful but due to the lack of staff, evening efficacy and the fact that were we being made to feel obligated to tip or acknowledge or "server" in any way other then what we saw for, we will not be returning.

Before reading the other reviews about the peeling paint and stains in the bathroom, read this first!
If you want a classic hotel with a pool, and private bathroom, this isn't for you.
If you want a really neat experience and a cool place to stay, this is it! Yes, there is a community bathroom, and the paint is peeling in it, but this hotel is very well maintained and clean. Built in the 1920's, its a classic castle!! We stayed in a basic room with a queen bed, nothing special, but while exploring the hotel, the dining rooms and library were gorgeous, even the hallway and grand stair case were impressive.
The breakfast in the morning was fantastic-try the sausage.
Staff was very helpful. When we got there we were checked in by a female who was very knowledgeable about places to eat around town. After she left the staff's name was Collin, and he was very nice and accommodating.
Once you step out of the hotel, you're surrounded by gardens and beautiful landscape, if you walk a little further you're also surrounded by walking trails in the woods.
Overall the hotel was a very neat experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Bring a towel to the bathroom every time you go

My teen daughter and I stayed at the Castle at Skylands Manor in New Jersey for just one night. It was conveniently located for our drive from Annapolis to West Point. Check in was easy, we pulled up to the front door as suggested to unpack, but then as stated, you have to drive a bit to go to the parking lot. We arrived back from dinner when it was late and very, very dark, but the flashlight on my phone lit the way for the walk to the manor. We did a self tour and checked everything out. We had a shared bath and paid $99 plus taxes. The bed was comfortable, the breakfast was really nice, but there was limited seating so we ended up in the hallway at a little bistro type table.

Room Tip: We didn't have a private bath but it didn't seem to be a problem.

This is a wonderfully romantic location! The castle is fascinating and the botanical gardens surrounding it are beautiful. We economized by getting the cheapest room, so we weren't surprised that it was on the small side. However, the room was very attractive and the bed extremely comfortable. It was nice to have a sink in the room since we were using hall bathrooms. We always had the bathrooms (separate men's and ladies' bathrooms, each with one shared sink and two large stalls with a toilet and a tub/shower) to ourselves. If you are up for a splurge, the queen suite is absoluetly gorgeous with a bedroom, sitting room, and huge bathroom. When Colin gave us a tour he mentioned that they often offer Group-ons with substantial discounts on all the rooms, including suites. We'll be on alert for one of those to book a return stay. The gardens would be great to see at different times of the year.
