Overview:

Let's face it, northern NJ lacks good Sushi, at least as far as I can tell. Well Kumo doesn't change that. It's very good for NJ, but pales in comparison to what you can find just 20 minutes away in Manhattan. With that said, Kumo is still a great contribution to Ridgewood, which is oversaturated with very mediocre Sushi establishments. We end up dining here at least twice a month because it's only a five minute ride from our home. There's never a wait for a table and the prices are very competitive.

Food Quality:

The sushi itself is pretty good, especially the standard rolls. (Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon, and the spicy variants of each). The special rolls are great too, though a bit more expensive. Miso soup is only a few bucks, and well worth it. Recently we tried their Katsu don dish, which was great too.

Tips:

Like 98% of Ridgewood establishments, it's a BYOB so don't forget your bottle of wine. Lastly, if you pay cash, they often provide a 20% discount, so hit the ATM first. Check your bill, I've found errors in about 50% of our visits.

Summary:
All in all, a solid restaurant. Would probably only earn 3-stars in Manhattan, but compared to our other options in NJ, this earns four stars from us.

In Ridgewood, a Foodie town. there are at least 6 Japanese venues to choose from. Most agree the best is Sakura Bana. So when Kumo opened down the street from Sakura, we did not think they would make it. However, what they offered distinctly was their decor. Subdued lighting, tree trunks gracing their sushi bar, and a wall of golden waves separated them from all other Japanese in town, even if they still have a casual dining feel. When they added a very good kitchen to their fanciful sushi offerings, my wife and I started eating there exclusively when we wanted Japanese food. This summer, they also started offering a 20% discount off the check Mon-Thurs when paid in cash. Their menu offers all the standard Japanese, and we found their Bento boxes to be a particularly good value. In the box, in addition to your main teriyaki entree, there is a generous portion of Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, a fried Shumai, and a California roll. Top price for this box is 17, less for non seafood teriyakis. You get miso soup and a salad with all their entrees. Once the 20% went into effect, we ate there once a week, and started ordering their special appetizers which we liked even more than standard Japanese. Chilean sea bass with a black bean sauce(11), a shrimp and mango salad with a sweet and sour sauce(8) and other appetizers starting at 8 dollars are all prepared stylishly. If I have one complaint it is that the sauces can be a bit gooey. My wife and I only know of one better Japanese kitchen in Bergen County, a restaurant called AKAI in Engelwood, which is on the other side of the County. If you are in the Ridgewood area and you like Sushi, teriyaki, tempura, don buri or suikyaki, try Kumo.
