“Best fried shrimp and value in the area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2011

Great food. Have to try John's antipasto salad. His butterflied shrimp are delicately fried and worth a repeat. Breakfasts at John and Elaine's are a tradition for our family on the weekend. John is gruff and reminds me of an Andy Rooney, but it is all part of the charm, so don't let the reviews about his rudeness deter you. He really has a heart of gold under the rough exterior. If you are looking for family fare, you can't do better. The locales come in regularly for a consistent, tasty meal.

“Rude and Disappointing!!!!!!!!!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2010

Many people go to eat here that don't have to!!! There are so many better places to eat. The OB Diner and Mariner's Cove are delicious! This place has rude, slow staff and the owner is a mean man. He speaks to his customers like they're garbage. And, guess what? Their food is not that good that they could talk to people the way they do. The service is slow. The place is dirty. He brags that he's been in business for 30 years and it looks like he hasn't cleaned it for that long either! They don't take credit or debit cards. These are not nice people!!! They should either retire or sell. I do not recommend this place to anyone!!! I'm shocked that people still go there, they must be from out of town!!! Please stay away from this place!!!!!!!!!!! It's beyond awful!!!!!!!!!!

“Good For Breakfast But.....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2009

This is a popular local spot for breakfast.... They serve lunch as well and also dinner two or three days a week. I would skip the lunch and dinner, really. Coffee and breakfast are good, service mediocre depending who you get. The only REAL drawback about going in here is the owner, John, is a bit EDP or 10-96 as we say in the City. As long as you can stay out of his way, you may enjoy your breakfast.
BTW: I only then "conditionally recommend" this restaurant.

“Okay food, kitschy atmosphere, miserable service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2008

We were staying nearby for a wedding, and our family chose John and Elaine's as a good place for everyone to go for breakfast. Our family unit went once as a group of three, once as a group of eight, and once as a large group. Our first breakfast was good, and the waitress was pretty nice. Our second breakfast was okay (although there were a couple of mixups with the order), but the service was a bit surly.

The third morning, a large group went to the restaurant together. I understand that it can be difficult for a mom and pop place to accommodate a large crowd, but the staff and the owner were completely rude. Part of what you pay for when you go to a restaurant is the service. Even if the server is having a bad day, or your group is a bit more than the restaurant is equipped to handle, a bare minimum of courtesy is not too much to expect.

We'd recommend this restaurant with some reservations to small parties, but avoid it like the plague if your group is more than a few people.
