“Pleasant and relaxing get away”
Reviewed August 3, 2010

Perfect place to go to get away from it all and not be bothered by Jersey Shore traffic and travelers from New York. Definitely well maintained and clean. Pool was also very clean and a delight. Will definitely come back.

I took my husband to the Isaac Hillard House for his birthday. We wanted to spend some time away from home without traveling too far. We drove 35 minutes to this location and we were not disappointed. The home was welcoming and we were greeted with a smile. The breakfast was made to order despite my very picky appetite. Phyl made us feel at home and we learned so much from a lady filled with wisdom.

We have stayed at many bed & breakfasts and this one is simply a delight! The room was impeccably clean and charming, the breakfasts were delicious and the swimming pool a lovely way to relax at the end of the day. Dash, Phyllis' dog was friendly and welcoming.

I had read several reviews of this establishment prior to our stay and found only one that was unsatisfactory...I have to wonder if that reviewer stayed at the same place we and so many others did! Highly recommend this for a relaxing and pampered weekend!

This Inn lacks attention to small details that we have become spoiled with other B&B's. The window AC wasn't turned on until we arrived, thus it took several hours for the room to cool off. We needed to ask for towels. The breakfast wasn't fully cooked. Even with the window AC the road noise was VERY loud. Make sure to ask for a room in the back of the house. We were disappointed and won't be returning to this B&B.

Because of the inn’s very flexible check-in hours, we attempt to be ‘green’ by not activating any room’s AC unit at its full capacity until the guests arrive. The ceiling fan was on and the air was on low when the guests arrived. I turned it up when I escorted the guests to the room. It does NOT take “several hours to cool the room.” Our rooms are not oversized. The inn is located conveniently on a county road on which there is normal traffic. Rarely, however, does a guest complain about “loud” noise. It is our practice to provide fresh towels EACH day when guests are out of the rooms. The guests were leaving the premises when the request was made. The guests’ room had yet to be serviced, which is when fresh towels would have been deployed. This was an unnecessary request. Each of the three family members was served the same dish; two were consumed completely. The woman ate some of hers and was asked if she wanted something else. She was offered a complete new service, but declined. During the many years of serving guests, one of the most favorable comments written by guests is how well they were treated in every detail while our at our inn.

My husband and I stayed at the Isaac Hilliard on a weekend getaway to the Pine Barrens for canoeing/kayaking. Our room was clean, well maintained and nicely decorated in Victorian period style. The innkeepers, Phyllis and Gene, were cordial and welcoming. We did not use the pool but it was also inviting and well maintained. The off street parking was very convenient. Phyllis made us a very nice breakfast that we ate in the Victorian period dining room. Phyllis also recommended an excellent Italian restaurant for dinner that we thought was a very good value with excellent food. The innkeepers' attention to detail was clearly evident throughout the B&B and the inn looked just like the pictures on its' website. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to staying there again.

We stayed in the Roses room which was cozy and had every convenience, including both air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a tv and remote and a hair drier and basket of toiletries in the bathroom. Breakfast, which consisted of fruit and a main course (their special peanut butter pancakes one day, poached eggs the nest) was delicious and I heartily recommend the coffee. Phyllis the owner was very helpful, both recommending local attractions and restaurants for dinner (which gave us a discount). There is a lot to explore within an easy drive of the inn , so I'd heartily recommend it for a weekend away, especially if you live between Washington DC and Connecticut. There is also a swimming pool which looked lovely though we never got to use it!

The inn, small in scale, was big in ambition. I stayed in the Isaac Hilliard suite, a large bedroom with sofa and four poster bed, a dressing room, and a large bathroom. The room was furnished in a mix of pieces, with a gas-fired fireplace. The furnishings and accessories were a crazy mix of periods and styles, as was much of the inn interior. Yet this unusual combination had a wonderful homey or personalized quality that was enjoyable. The innkeeper served a delightful breakfast each morning in the dining room. Tables are available for each of the five rooms in the inn. There is even an in-ground (although unheated) and very nice looking pool and terrace area. Parking is provided behind the inn. All in all it was a very good experience, which I am planning to repeat later in the year. I recommend this quaint and quirky bed and breakfast to any visitors to central New Jersey.
