Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The history of the City of Paterson includes its beginnings as the ambitious project of Alexander Hamilton and the Society for Establishing Useful Manufacturers (S.U.M.) in 1792 at the Great Falls, the early development of water power systems for industrial use, and the various types of manufacturing that occurred in the District's mills into the 20th Century. These included cotton fabrics, railroad locomotives, textile machinery, jute, and silk spinning, weaving, and dyeing, among many others. The Great Falls also represents compelling stories of the lives of immigrants who labored in the mills, those who owned and operated manufacturing concerns and became wealthy, and the quest of laborers and the labor movement for better working conditions and pay. Immigrants still settle today in Paterson to pursue their versions of Hamilton's vision, creating a diverse and vibrant culture.

Considering the location place is just ok... too bad you cannot go close and personal with the water... trails are closed off for the public ;(

This Great Falls may be great at one time based on its history. However, I don't see anything great about it today. Especially after 2 hours of driving just to see this park, I was a bit disappointed that I spent no more than 15 minutes which was already too long for this place. This place is very small, not very clean including the water, and the water fall is literally tuck away with fences so you can't get to. I have to say that the Visitor Center has more things to see than the park itself. The park ranger in the Visitor Center was very nice, and courteous though. There is no charge for entry to this park.

My friend and I visited here on our own little national park tour of NJ. While the falls are cool and the history of the area and what the falls were used for is very interesting, especially Alexander Hamilton's role, it was a little bit disappointing. Usually at any NPS site, there are rangers outside to help guide you or answer questions. There were rangers there who were very helpful, but they were inside the visitor's center the whole time.

The falls are beautiful. Our park ranger/guide, Ernie, was very informed and we enjoyed all the information he gave us as we walked the park. If you go, you must get a tour from a ranger so you get all the history and future plans for the park. They will be building the surrounding area and park up quite nicely in the next 15 years. If you're in the area, you may as well go to Lambert Castle which is about 1.5 away. There is so much history in that area. I'm looking forward to visiting one day in the future to see how much progress has been made.

We got to experience the falls from the park. Found a place for the car just a few feet away. The ranger was helpful and answered all our questions. The surrounding area is quite run down
