OVERVIEW: The Riverboat Mansion is a great property with many unique features. If you have a large group, and you want to be in the heart of the boardwalk, this place is hard to beat. We stayed for a full week at the end of June 2018. We had a group of 12 family members consisting of mostly middle-aged adults, but also one teenager, a couple of millennials, and my 92-year-old mother. Everyone loved the place. We all had lots of space to spread out and not feel cramped at all. One nice feature you don’t always find in shore houses – no bunk beds. Everyone had a normal bed to sleep in.
LOCATION: The location at 800 Wesley Ave. is terrific. Three blocks to the boardwalk (near the Music Pier). Across the street from Romeo’s pizza shop. Next door to Chill ice cream shop. Less than a 5-minute walk to the ACME grocery store, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, and Hoy’s 5 & 10 souvenir shop. Two blocks to the Ocean City Bike shop, which not only rents bikes and surreys, but also rents wheelchairs. All of your necessities will be within walking distance.
UNIQUE FEATURES: Something you almost never find at a NJ shore rental house: bed and bath linens were included, as well as beach towels and 10 beach tags. Best of all: 10 beach chairs, 2 umbrellas, and 4 boogie boards were set up for us in advance at our special spot on the beach each day. All we had to carry were our beach towels. Nice! We also appreciated the piano in the 3rd Floor hallway. Although it was old and somewhat out-of-tune, it was still helpful for my son to keep up with his practice throughout the week. One additional unique feature: the house has both a fully-equipped kitchen, AND a prep kitchen with an extra refrigerator, Keurig, toaster oven, larger pots and pans, as well as additional dishes and flatware, and cleaning supplies. Very handy!
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: The Riverboat Mansion has a lot of old-house charm. It’s basically like renting an entire bed & breakfast, without the breakfast. That said, it does have some old-house quirks. Some of the windows stick and don’t lock fully. Not all of the windows/doors have full blinds to keep out the morning sun when you want to sleep late. The window a/c units on the 2nd and 3rd floor provide uneven cooling at best, and some of the units were rather noisy. Some of the stair railings are a bit wobbly. A few of the beds, especially on the 4th floor, are creaky. Although all of the bathrooms and both of the kitchens are modern, a couple of the bathroom sinks drain slowly. And, although the house is fully-equipped with almost everything you might need, we were missing some minor items like an iron and an ironing board. Also, we couldn’t find a tea kettle. The burglar alarm was not working. And, if you are looking for outdoor space, be aware that the property has 3 awesome porches, but no yard and no grill.
All in all, 800 Wesley Ave. is a great property, with a few minor issues that will probably be resolved over time. Enjoy it!
