Don't let the setting of this restaurant make you underestimate the food. Set in a strip mall with limited parking (at busy times the provide valet parking), the entrance is shared by the restaurants take out pizza (which is quite good) counter and the reservation area. Once in the nicely appointed dining room, the food becomes the star ... (nicely steamed clams with tomato and cream, surprising green bean salad, excellent short ribs with herbed risotto, baked, crusted salmon with crab risotto, breast of duck with cranberries, nice selection of desserts). Service can be erratic on weekends as the restaurant is busy, but if you are patient with the crew they will work hard to make your meal enjoyable (rust their recommendations for what is good that night). BYO makes the value even better in an area without many BYOs.

Went here a few times over the years and it was up-and-down quality wise. But last few times it seems to have levelled off at a higher level and is worth a night out.

Dined at Cafe L'Amore on a Saturday evening with another couple.
Unfortunately they do not take reservations for groups of 4 which was the major drawback of the evening. We had to wait a little over an hour for a table as there were a lot of large groups in the place. One we got seated they were apologetic and quick to serve us.....we must have looked hungry and had already polished off one bottle of wine. My wife had the gnocci and I had a veal dish that was very tasty. The pizzas from their wood burning oven looked very good. They also had rolls and semolina breads that were oven toasted before they were brought to the table.

There are some problems with Cafe L'Amore, but the quality of the food is not one of them. In fact, depending on what you order, the cuisine at this restaurant can rival that of some of the best Italian restaurants in the NYC metro area including those in Manhattan. Add to the fact that it's a BYOB establishment and you will receive decent value for your money. One great feature is that they usually post the specials of the day on their website in addition to their standard offerings.

If you enjoy seafood, the fish here is impeccable. On a recent visit with my wife, we enjoyed a delicious fillet of wild salmon stuffed with crab meat in a lemon white wine sauce and a scrumptious fillet of blackened mahi mahi with sun dried tomatoes, capers and lemon basil vinaigrette. My appetizer of fried polenta with grilled sausage and broccoli rabe was also sensational. Desserts here are not made in house and are not noteworthy but by all means passable.

Basically the problems that you can encounter here have to do with the service, wait time for a table and an occasional failure to honor a reservation (Reservations accepted for 5 or more people only on weekends) at the requested time. Service is hit or miss. On some nights, service can be just fine. On other nights, it could take a long time to receive your food. There is, however, no excuse for not honoring reservations within twenty minutes of the appointed time on weekends. This is a common complaint among some of our friends who also patronize this restaurant.

On the whole, Cafe L'Amore is a local neighborhood gem of an Italian restaurant that is worth the trip, even if you don't live in the immediatel area.
