Atlantic City Country Club

Owner description: As one of America's oldest and most prolific golf clubs, Atlantic City Country Club has been home to many firsts, including being the "Birthplace of the Birdie." The earliest traditions of this seaside links course are still evident today. Finely manicured fairways and large sloping green complexes protected by deep sand bunkers remain the course's signature as it did more than a century ago. Long carries over natural ponds and salt water marshes also make the course a formidable challenge for any golfer. Shifting breezes, the distinct scent of saltwater, and windswept fescue only add to the total experience. It's no wonder Atlantic City Country Club is named the #1 Public Golf Course in the State of NJ by Golf Week, Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. ATLANTIC CITY COUNTRY CLUB ALSO FEATURES THE TAPROOM BAR & GRILLE AND EQUISITE WEDDING AND BANQUET FACILITIES.

A week ago, another couple we are friendly with called us to meet us out here for their happy hour specials. They had been told by friends, AND saw for themselves on the club's website that the club advertised Happy Hour specials. The club advertises - on their own website:

"Happy Hour 4pm - 7pm: Offering half priced tap beers and appetizers, $5 wine & martinis served with our light fare bar menu."

So exactly what would you think, reading this? (BTW, this was over a week ago, and it is STILL on their website.)
So we meet our friends there. We are given a table in the Pub Room, and our friends told us that they were told, ordinarily, we would have to sit at the (very small) bar area for the Happy Hour specials, but there was a political fundraiser taking place in that area of the room, so we had to "settle" for a table. This was fine with us, although we were told we had to be out by 7pm, as that apparently the table was reserved for others at that time. Uh, ok, way to make people feel welcome, but whatever, that would have been fine too. The ambiance was nice, the views were lovely, the service was pretty great, and it was a nice touch that the chef came out and went to each of the three occupied tables to ask how it was. We didn't tell him that we felt the food was just ok. When we ordered, we again confirmed that this was the appetizer menu and told our waitress we were there "for the happy hour specials." Oh, and what I copied and pasted from the website was ALSO printed at the bottom of the menu - "half priced appetizers."
In total, the four of us split 6 appetizers: two tempura sprimp, two dumplings, one crabmeat cocktail and one onion ring. I thought even at half off the prices were a bit outrageous, but we were here for the experience too.

So imagine our surprise when we were presented the bill and we were charged FULL price for the apps. We talked with the waitress first, she indicated that well, we should have known that only SOME appetizers are discounted each night, and that there is a board up at the bar that just tells you which ones. We said, uh, no - it says at the bottom of you menu "half priced" and we weren't allowed to sit at the bar area, anyway! After a bit of back-and-forth, we asked for her manager. After arguing with the manager, she left for a long time, and then returned with a proper bill. In case you are wondering if we were being overly cheap the difference in the bills *FOR THE FOOD ALONE* was $60!

It was just a lot of drama that ruined the end of the night and was completely DUMB and UNNECESSARY. If you are going to be open to the public, advertise "selected half priced appetizers" and you would be in the clear. It is extremely disappointing to see a full week later and they have still not remedied this situation. We will not return.

Last week, our family met at the Atlantic City Country Club main dining room for Mother's Day. The food was mediocre, at best. Several of the entrees were barely warm. They advertised a long stem rose for all mothers but under ordered and ran out early. Expensive and disappointing but we made the most of it by enjoying this historic old place with the beautiful views from the lovely main dining room.

Recently I was invited to enjoy a round of golf w some friends. On our planning was the Atlantic City Country Club. Now I am only a casual golfer but wanted to share with you that this course is just breathtaking. I highly recommend you bring your camera for some beautiful background photos of the Atlantic City skyline. As a bonus you are just minutes from some wonderful local eateries and shopping. The staff at the course treated us very well and we enjoyed our golfing day. Consider a stop here, it's tops!

Good golf course, great views, excellent conditioning, of the course, great feel in the restaurant. Great views on the course, and in the dinning room. We loved it at the spring rates.

This place is part of Atlantic City and golf history. The course is old, tough and manicured. The locker room is a testament to sport and golf history. The restaurant has excellent views of the course, meadows and city and the food is first rate.
